HR just informed me I can request a voluntary lay off through my manager. Has anyone else heard of this?

It’s called a “golden handshake” - we pay you to retire. That was 20 years ago when it was common. Not today. They want you to go without the handshake or pay on the back. It’s good for the bottom line….bad for the rest of us.
Best way to get a package is reverse psychology. Tell them you plan on staying another 20 years. You'll be gone before you know it.
So you were having some other conversation with HR and they offered this wisdom?
I am planning to retire soon and my horrible manager said NO when I asked, yet there are several others in my organization who were laid off prior to retirement. I had another manager in our area say my manager did a dirty and they were asked who was retiring in their area and they were given the package.
A lady in our group asked to be included in the next round of efficiency layoffs and the manager granted it.
Many people have requested this from our managers, and in some cases it’s worked … to get included on the next round of lists - but mostly doesn't work this way
Asking for something and there being a snowballs chance in he-l that it will happen are 2 different things.
The only time something like this would be official is if u received an email from HR offering you a buyout. That has happened to me at a different company. It was a very painless process. I submitted a request to buy out and the next day I received an approval with the total amount I would receive. It didn’t go through my manager. I had to tell him when I gave me two weeks notice.
There's no widely known mechanism to get yourself laid off.
So HR just told you that you CAN request it (just like you can request anything) but nothing will happen besides awkwardness. HR just wanted you off the phone.
It will never happen. Some have approached HR and were turned away.
Nope...maybe voluntary termination.
Nope, you cannot. I heard this directly from MA.
Never happened
