Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

Reality for the over 50 layoffs

New data shows 24% of people laid off between ages 50-65 can't find another job.

Those who do? Average 11% pay cut.

Men take 15% hits, women 7%.

The wait is worse: 55-64 year olds spend 26 weeks unemployed vs 19 weeks for younger workers.

Many settle for jobs without benefits, crushing retirement plans.

Half of older workers expect gradual retirement transitions.

Reality? 70% get the full stop treatment.

Save young or work forever. There's no middle ground.

"Save young or work forever. There's no middle ground." Excellent words of advice for anyone who will listen. Save and invest early and as aggressively as possible, start with what you can, then try to increase it at least once a year or with each pay increase. Try to at least get your free money match in your 401k if that's the most you can afford to give up at the moment. If you get a bonus, try to save/invest it instead of spending it. I feel lucky I was given this advice when I was young enough for it to matter. Those early years of compounding interest and gains are everything.

I wonder if there may be an about face on this problem years down the road, but if there is, I imagine it will be too late for those of us in our 50's now.

The reality for this over 55 is that I'd rather be a cashier or crossing guard than be a part of this horrible company that only enriches its ELT while steadily devaluing all other employees. When lawyers run HR, AI reports back on what you're doing and saying, and benefits are removed one after another while leadership collects their many millions, its time to move on. This place has jumped the proverbial shark.

We were looking for someone on my team a few yers ago, we interviewed alot of people but settled on someone who was over 55. They had the exact experience we needed and fit it perfectlly into the role. By far one of the best hires ever for the team.
