Talent Card....... For What??????.........

Honestly, don’t waste your time trying to make your talent card perfect. It’s not going to help you. You’d be smarter to use that time meeting people, making connections, and getting noticed by the folks who have power. Play the office politics game, be extra friendly to the bosses, and maybe—just maybe—you’ll get lucky and land a role.

Because let’s face it: being really good at your job doesn’t count for much here. There are many cases where people with strong skills get ignored. One of the worst examples? The GOA manager used their influence to get their husband into the Exploration Review Team—supposedly a team only for the top geoscience experts. So much for fairness, right?

It just goes to show that friends, family, and politics matter more than skill or hard work. For those of us who’ve spent years learning and doing the job well, it’s really discouraging. But hey… that’s the reality we’re dealing with.

Your statement is not accurate if a persons position has been eliminated in the USA and has been moved to India. You must be living under a rock or a mid level manager that thinks they are above everyone else. :)

These selection events are a just a show to avoid lawsuits. Make it appear that everyone. has a chance to get a job when in reality the job owners know who they want. It would have been better just select the new org months ago and let everyone who was to be left standing go earlier with a package so they can move on with their lives.

This whole selection event was a farce. I was left standing despite having multiple EEs on every PMP I ever had. I received R&As my last month. This selection was based on favoritism and whose a--s you were kissing. Those who say otherwise are a part of the privileged who don't have to perform or do any actual work since they have a connection. I'm sure this will get thumbs down to he-l but the truth is what it is.

It’s all about being at the right place at the right time with the right skills. Some phenomenal people were let go and unfair to say if you were really good at your job you would have a job.

It’s easy to say that if you’re good, you’ll land a job. But in some functions and regions, entire teams were effectively deleted. Look at Aberdeen and Australia. Lots of very high quality people being let go as the jobs simply aren’t there.

Implying that those people didn’t get roles because they simply weren’t good enough is cruel and untrue.

Then there’s an added layer of politics and favoritism on top, especially looking at the mystical “closed roles”.

@OP, this is 100% true. Part of it is luck too. If the hiring manager for the role you want is a buddy of someone else they want more in that role. Regardless of skill, experience, and customer feedback, you could push yourself so hard to perform, and your family will still be in a world of financial pain because you simply got unlucky with the one hiring manager that wanted a buddy in the role. 99 out of 100 other hiring managers you would have gotten the role and survived to the next round.

@as that’s not true that if you’re good, you will land a job. 30 to 40% of HR is being cut. If your job is being cut and you’re competing against someone who already has a job in their role, you’re not getting their job

Want proof the whole thing is a farce?

After spending considerable about of time on my “one pager”, I sent it to my selection rep as requested.

I sent it as a OneDrive link.

The link was never used, and the document was never read.

Do not trust these people. They lie to your face.

So in my function, the people that were best at their jobs actually got to keep their jobs. The people with personality issues or weren't as competent in their roles got left standing standing.
