Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

The current "Big (your chosen adjective here ) Bill" probably won't help

If the bill passes tonight without major changes, hospitals and other medical facilities across the country will suffer financially and this financial pain will be shared with health insirance companies. Even if Anthem were to change its philosoohy and start valuing its employees, it doesn't seem like it would be possible to avoid even more RIFS.

Hoping someone can suggest an alternative scenario where this doesn't happen.

@hr+1jz222ft0 Per person Medicaid members had higher cost, but it is due to the risk mix shifting. Also when the Public Health Emergency kept states from disenrolling members, this kept Medicaid costs artificially low on a per person basis.

@hp Centene's slide is also due to Medicaid members using more services. Even if you don't lose members, if they are sicker, the company may be losing money. Just another reason to move away from healthcare.

@hg Stock is down big today for 2 reasons (a) Centene pulling guidance, and (b) expectation of Medicaid membership losses from BBB. Although Centene pulling guidance is also partially due to government policy chances, so different sides of same coin.

Yes the bill is going to negatively impact out company: people being cut from Medicaid enrollment = Elevance loses members. Stock down 11% today.

Our Medicaid team was affected by cuts to Medicaid as well as the expansion. If we lose patients then we will lose team members.

@bt if there are fewer insured (Medicaid, exchange, etc.) then fewer employees will be needed to manage their benefits. Every aspect of life is political whether you want to face it or not.

Another stupid political post. Riffs have to do with stockholder greed. While cuts hurt the business model for us maybe Elevance needs to be more innovative or learn that double digit profit isn’t always possible. Maybe venture capitalists shouldn’t be allowed to buy rural hospitals. Elevance pays people a sh-t ton of people to analyze these bills. They should see the headwind’s coming and be smarter. Instead they will riff because that is the only thing they know how to do.

If Medicaid is such a savior of rural hospitals, why do they still close if too many of their patients are on Medicare and/or Medicaid. The biggest threat to rural hospitals is demographics and there isn't a fix for that.

The seeds for insurance industry RIFS were planted more than 25 years ago with Y2K. Many incorrectly decided to update their legacy code as opposed to scrap the systems as many other companies did. This caused a lot of colleges and universities to drop their legacy programs.
