The job outlook is bleak

I’ve been on LinkedIn looking for work because I am 90% sure im losing my job.. There are so many posts stating that jobs are not real. The companies are just posting them to increase their traffic. They seem to have some evidence to back it up. There aren’t a lot of jobs available an applicants report getting ghosted. I never thought I’d have to worry about this. I was pretty sure I’d retire from Chevron. I’ve worked very hard the entire time. I’ve been here and got good performance ratings. Trying to stay positive, but it’s hard. We’re in the second wave and we’ve been going through this for over a year. It seems kind of heartless the way this whole reorg has been handled. I’m truly disappointed in a company that I gave my all to that I believed and trusted.

The jobs are real! Just go onto Chevron jobs board and see how many are going to a country who hasn’t figured out basic drinking water and municipal sanitation.

@OP, you're right to be disappointed because this reduction-in-force/reorg has been a colossal failure. From the very get-go, it was mismanaged and the guardrails supposedly in place aren't working well. Given the frequency of these events, the LT should know better, right?!

As for finding a job, managing perception is everything. Use verbiage from job descriptions that are suited for your skill set, so that what you've done at Chevron is translated into the same/similar tasks and duties in other industries. If you're struggling with this, use AI to help, but don't use it verbatim, so what you publish sounds like you. You might also engage a service to help you refine your resume and increase your marketability.

Also, if you're an older worker (50+), consider dropping off jobs from your work history on LinkedIn dated before 2000, and remove your graduation date from university or technical school, if applicable. We know that age discrimination isn't legal, but it's a real thing, so anything you can do to boost an initial contact from a recruiter or search firm.

I just watched a story on 60 minutes about AI jobs that USA corporations have moved to Kenya to exploit their work force. The Corporate world is moving so much work overseas, pretty soon the only people that will have jobs are the ICE agents rounding up undocumented immigrants. :(

It depends on the function, demographic (age, race, gender), skills, and network.

Some had jobs lined out well before selection. Others will arrange jobs with relative ease over the coming months. And many will be left holding the bag due (stale skills, etc.).

Know where you fall and plan accordingly

Linkedi Premium helps. I did a 1 month trial and everything changed. I started to be contacted by real recruiters and not just some bots listing positions over and over.

It took me 6 months to land a job outside, I started as soon as they began talking about selection shenanigans. Be positive, and realize we are well paid, so it will take more time to find am equally well paid role. There are roles out there.

Sorry to hear you are going through this uncertainty. One thing caught my attention about your post was the comment about getting good performance ratings. Don’t over index that as it is a common mistake. performance ratings are very subjective and frankly do not mean much at all. There are no forced curves throughout the company and what you actually accomplish and the reputation on delivery of results and how you carry yourself as a team member and as a leader is waaaaaaay more important. People tend to over index PMP ‘stuff’ and that is a common mistake.

Getting a job of equivalent pay quickly will likely be very difficult. I strongly believe chevron folks were overpaid for the amount of actual work performed. I say this as an acquisition hire that was part of the wave 1 and survived. Cut your unnecessary expenses to the bone and save as much as possible between now and wave 2 and be mentally prepared to take just any ole job, if it becomes necessary just to pay the bills.

@bb We’ve been looking- glassdoor, sub to company sites, tailored the resume and cover letter. Technical, business, agile folks are looking but so are a lot of other laid off job hunters. What other advice you got?

There are jobs available, but unless you can go to an Independent or tech, I'm struggling to find anything more than a PSG 22 equivalent. It's demoralizing.

I had a boss long ago (pre-Chevron) that would advertise numerous positions every few weeks just to let the competition think we were doing great (in his warped mind). LinkedIn isn’t the only thing you should be looking at. Go look at actual company websites. Make a list of those you might want to work for. It takes time EVERY WEEK but if you really want a job, don’t get lazy looking at just LinkedIn.

Completely agree. The coworkers I’ve talked to are also having a hard time finding a comparable job. We’ve been looking since January. Its a tough market right now. These are high performers at Chevron so its not about skill level.
Grab a position- network like crazy to get one. Then, it will give you breathing room to look for something better because Chevron is short term if you’re in the US.
