2025 Layoffs in Q3

IT, Finance and Commercial are expected to layoff ~300 people in 2 waves starting with IT in early Q3 2025. A majority of operational support for IT will be moved to outsourced providers. Major IT restructuring will be done using the “spans and layers” concept suggested by BCG to reduce management layers.

@8qc what do you mean by "counted?" I get that the loaded labor costs of anyone lost through reasons in addition to lay-offs were counted in terms of dollars to CPC's bottom line.

@OP anyone over age 60 in IT was laid off. Also informed by HR to train the LTI replacements or no severance package. Calls are recorded and attendance is mandatory. Being threatened is another way of showing how much they care.

@8nm you have no idea what you are talking about. They counted them for sure. Those who quit were also counted. They also counted anyone who got fired and did not allow them to backfill those positions.

@8nm Yes, they definitely targeted older employees at least on the commercial side. Look at the data. It was definitely age discrimination. But sad part is these people had so much experience that you won’t be able to replace. CPChem will be hurt by this.

@8k6 Accurate. Informed speculation: Operating within CPC's "strategic partner's" BT plan, managers receive "credit" for making prescribed cutbacks in expenses -- labor is always the biggest expense -- so if you're laying off someone who is the oldest one on your team, you don't get "credit" for the lay-off if you let them retire.

@8e0 they let go of some that could retire. They did not want to retire but were forced. Great job!

@8j6 I don't understand why anyone thought there would be one round of layoffs. There will be 2 more rounds. Next year will be even worse. The problem is the people they let go is the same people that held the company togther. Some of these things can not be learned in one week or one month. They think these contractors can just learn it by documents and verbal communication. They are clearly diluted. Most of your managers got promoted because they got lucky or because they talked a good game. That is why they don't understand what their employees are doing. How can you appericate your employees when you don't have a true grasp on what their day to day life is like and the problems they solve? Cheaper isn't better. You get what you pay for.

@8gv The key word from Pru Sak’s message is “first step” which obviously means there will be more layoffs as has been discussed ad nauseam here. Second, he also kept hinting at the EIP town hall about “outsourcing” and “nothing is off the table”. We all knew this was coming so quit crying about it. It’s going to get worse before it remotely gets better. I will say though, the amount of talent and how they are picking people makes no sense. A bit of the good ole boy network does certainly seem to be in play here. Sad

@8gf good question. I can't read it either. I am sure they are proud of themselves and cheering as they go to the bank. It must be nice to live in that fancy new hq building built for contractors and LT. Watch out ops. They are looking at you next. If they can replace knowldegable IT people, they can replace operators too. Why does anyone need to know the process? Get in there and make ethylene. Anyone can do it.

Ok, which one of you brave people sent the layoff news email to Bloomberg reporters? Way to go! Now that I’m jobless I can’t afford to pay for the article but hope it had some good meat in it. Anyone read it?

@8e2 Yep, do the math for this round of layoffs. That’s a minimum of $200k in equipment that they just let get ruined. Im sure UPS will be nice to it. Unbelievable!

@8e4 Bow I wonder how good they’ll be at executing the severance pay. Heck, it took two weeks to get a freaking box to send their stuff back.

@8e2 And good luck getting your personal stuff back from your office. I’m sure it’ll be months if ever, or they’ll send the wrong stuff to the wrong people. Why not let you schedule a time to get it yourself?

Anyone else get their box to return laptop and phone? What is this Mickey Mouse sh-t? First you have to put it together like an origami project and second it’s the size of a small moving box with no provided filler. So let’s pack a couple thousand dollars worth of IT hardware and let that cr-p rattle around and break. WTF CPChem?!? Once again great execution, but then again they’ll probably charge us for broken equipment. And then you wonder why you’re going broke! SMDH!

@8dy They appear to be getting rid of some long term very knowledgeable employees. I don’t think there’s rhyme or reason to it. Probably just anyone that has ever been on the HR sh-t list.

How are they deciding who’s cut or not? Are they picking a department then drawing names? Last in first out?

@837 clearly you have never been through a layoff. Yes, there are two more rounds. This next one will not be pleasent. Those who are left will feel these mistakes for a very long time. Good luck.

@891 Why even have a cleaning crew? Make each department clean their own sections then choose a group to clean the restrooms each week.

@86k Now you buy your own trash can and empty it yourself. But there's still a cleaning crew.

@863 Our genius LT decided to take everyone’s personal trash cans away at HQ last year to save money and make it more “efficient” for cleaning staff. Now you’re responsible for taking all your trash to a communal trash can. Writing should have been on the wall then!

@831 did it ever occur to you that the people posting these “more layoffs this week” or “this Friday” or “3 more rounds” snippets have no idea what they are talking about?!! They may not even work for the company, and that more than likely THEY are actually the sadists and get pleasure from creating chaos, furthering people’s anxiety and fueling more negativity. I seriously doubt that the company would slowly tear the bandaid back an inch at a time. Will there be more? Probably. Will it be every week, or even once a month- seriously doubtful. Am I concerned? I was concerned before Aug 1 just due to the market. Is losing my job still on my mind? Yes. All I can do is show up, do my best, keep my options open, and hope for the better times. We are not alone in losing our jobs, we just thought it happened to other people. Stop spreading rumors. You just end up looking like an id--t on Friday when nothing has happened.

If you have not moved your pension out of CPChem’s control, you might want to consider it. I don’t know if the plan is covered by PBGC insurance, but if the plan becomes insolvent or terminated in the face of financial hardship, your benefits will be greatly reduced, particularly if you are a long-term employee. PBGC insurance has limits as to what they cover. You have a lot to lose, don’t let them take anything else from you! Most companies don’t have pension plans anymore, it wouldn’t surprise me if CPChem does away with theirs next.
