Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Laid off after eight years

I made peace with the fact that being good at what you do and being dedicated won’t help you keep your job. I realized years ago that a highly skilled veteran can be let go while someone younger and cheaper stays. So, while I did my job well, I made sure not to go above and beyond unnecessarily.

Knowing this, I’ve prioritized my well-being and kept other options open, at least tentatively. Since we found out about the reorg, I stepped up my efforts and I lucked out. I have another job secured.

So, don’t despair. The days of loyalty and appreciation are long gone. A sense of professional fulfillment and accomplishment isn't really an option. Think of yourself first, your needs and your future. Everything else will fall into place.

Solid mentality and efforts. Glad you were able to land quickly. Companies only see you as a number these days. It's not just here, its everywhere. They need to make room for to shift more work to India for the cheap labor.

@am yeah that’s what I read too. “I learned a long time ago not to try…”

The bigger the company, the harder it is to demonstrate that your efforts made a difference. There are lots of jackals out there who will quietly and deceitfully take credit for some or all of your work (first line managers are the worst). It's been nearly 40 years now since companies first told employees that the company is not loyal to them, and they should act as independent contractors rather than loyal employees. In other words, pad your resume with accomplishments valued outside of Chevron, in case you need it, like the last couple days.

Sounds like a lazy person making excuses like “hard work never pays” so I might as well not work hard. Have some integrity

Not hard at all. Follow the money.

Some really questionable folks have been retained while absolute rock stars have been let go. Hard to make sense of it all...
