Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Is your manager gaslighting you?

Elevance Health has developed a negative culture of leadership gaslighting their associates. If you experiencing, anxiety, depression, and doubting your own abilities when interacting with your leadership, it is likely you are experiencing gaslighting. Do any of these examples sound familiar?

  • They repeatedly challenges your recollection of events, making you doubt your interpretation of situations.
  • They downplay your emotions or concerns, making you feel invalid or unreasonable.
  • They deny things they said or did, even with evidence.
  • You are ignored, left out of important meetings, or isolated from colleagues who could offer support.
  • They take credit for your work by claiming your ideas or accomplishments as their own.
  • They micromanage so that they can exhibit excessive control and scrutiny which creates a climate of doubt and manipulation.
  • They are compulsive liars, they blame others, they spread misinformation or falsely attribute blame.
  • They might deny facts or events that you witnessed or experienced.
  • They might repeatedly ask you to clarify what happened or make you doubt your memory.
  • They accuse others of doing the very things they do

But know that, gaslighters are miserable people and you know what they say, "misery loves company"! But No one has the right to do wrong, not even if wrong has been done to them. So keep your head up and keep moving forward!!

I have to say, this happens at the “upper” levels of leadership here as well.

@bp There are a lot of insecure managers at this company. And the sad thing is, they know that they are not qualified to be in their positions...smh...OP

@bh You hit the nail on the head! Gaslighters are very very insecure people and they have no business in positions of authority...OP

@bv I am so sorry this happened to you but at least now you will be able to recognize what's going on if it ever happens again...OP

@cr Completely agree. Out of numerous managers, I have only had one manager that didn't match the list in the OP. Having worked at several companies previously, it was immediately noticeable upon arrival that this company does not have any decent management training for people leaders. And when managers perform like the OP, absolutely nothing is done about it when complaints are filed.

@bh There must be a ton of insecure managers then. I’ve been here many years and had many managers and the majority behaved this way.

Is it possible managers are deflecting blame and responsibility for team performance ahead of layoffs instead of taking ownership for issues that have been flagged but not addressed. I have started questioning myself on things that I know I didn’t do.

@ OP - The average manager does not do this - just insecure ones -it is quite commonly seen in Directors and almost always in SVP - when the poster mentioned "manager training" - there is no such thing - except that people with less leadership experience than you -that you likely report to - tell you how to do your job -

There is no leadership at this toxic place - only micro management and factory like supervision

Yep. There must be leadership training that outlines the very steps laid out by OP because I have experienced it to a tee. Luckily, I’m not experiencing it in my current role but in my last role it was ridiculous. OMG the Director wasted so much time on trying to tell me my PowerPoint slides were wrong and when I looked at the example she sent over to me to replicate and then I would see no difference to the one I created. It was maddening especially when we wasted hours on PPT for a 30 minute meeting no one paid attention to anyway.

Yea we are trained to GL associates to get the most out of them. In return we get huge bonuses and faster corporate advancement.

You should notice leadership pushing RTO more and more…all in the script.
