Cool Brand, Cold Career Path

We are riding high on the brand’s legacy and cool factor, while quietly trading career growth and fair pay for hope, nostalgia, and the dream of finally being “seen.” All in swoosh-shaped denial.

It’s like being stuck in a long-term relationship with someone who swears they’ll change… but never does.

They hype you up with, “You’re so special,” and drop just enough sweet talk to keep you hanging on. You tell yourself you’re lucky to be with someone so charming, so admired. But reality check: you’re emotionally sidelined, your needs are ignored, and any chance at personal growth is… well, not happening.

Your friends gently ask, “Why are you still with them?” And you respond, “You don’t understand — we’ve been through so much. This relationship is iconic.”

Meanwhile, you’re gaslit into thinking the vibe of the relationship is more important than actual progress, respect, or fulfillment. You keep hoping that someday, your loyalty will finally pay off. Spoiler: the calendar keeps flipping, and nothing changes.

except for those that get promotions, but they don't count.....you know, in the name of "equity", or is it favoritism..likely both....put it this way, we know that if you're a +35, how do I say it...."majority"......just look elsewhere....this ain't no place for your folk 'round here, ya hear

It’s not very different anywhere else. Plus, Nike is a long tenured company. Therefore, in order for your “career path” to exist, you need the next job to be available. Which would mean someone else gets promoted or leaves. And that doesn’t always happen. Not to mention you’re not the only one vying for that next job.

Wake up. No one is going to tap you on the shoulder and say, it’s your turn, you’re the one. You need to be vocal, you need to be ready and you need to take what you want. And most importantly, you need to actually be qualified not just think you are because you’ve done your current job for a year or two.

Make it known what your next move is and do everything to prepare for it. It might not happen as soon as you hoped re: what I said above, but if Nike is where you want to be long term then you need to realize it’s going to take a little longer. Or get lucky with someone’s exit.
