Part of a RIF last year and I can’t get it out of my head my manager had to of known I would be part of it for at least a month or more beforehand. 1:1s were pointless usually less than 10 minutes long. No interest in me or my career or helping me. Would only tell me to continue doing what I’m doing keep up good work etc. in hindsight maybe he knew and just didn’t want to put any time into me? For managers who have done the RIFing, what does it entail exactly? Or did I just have a shi!!y boss?

What is RIF ?
As a large bank there is no one size fits all. It all depends on how the top feels about communicating to the bottom. Immediate managers will know at least a month ahead to plan for distribution of work, opening a requisition and so on.
As a Vice President, I can confirm that RIF notices are provided in advance. The amount of notice given depends on the employee’s grade level. Over the past five years, I’ve been informed of every RIF 60 to 90 days before notifications were issued to those impacted.
Managers having nothing to talk about during 1:1s seems to be the norm here. I used to have silence contests on the phone with mine and actively count the seconds before he would attempt to eeek out a genuine conversation. It’s unlikely your situation had to do with an upcoming RIF. A good chunk of management here is just very, very poor because they are checked out too or misaligned with the team the manage or busy managing up. Blame the tippy top of the pyramid for this horrid culture. Sorry you’re still thinking about the RIF. This place sure can do a number on a person’s mental health.
I am a manager and I did not know about the last round of RIFs. I know there MAY be another one coming in my area but I don’t know when or who would be impacted.
team leads in efcc were told at least a week in advance. directors knew much earlier
Of course they know, higher you go, longer they know. Everyone knows couple months ahead minimum. Sounds like we had the same boss.
