Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Is the ETW purge in GT over?

I am the title, fully expected to get the chop last Friday. Shocked I didn’t and frankly, wasn’t going to be mad if I did: my years here have been a stressful mind f**k. Are the layoffs still happening for GT? I have read here that last Friday would be it, but also that it could go through 6/13? Is it always a Friday or can it be any day? I feel deeply for anyone who was impacted, I’d just like to know if it’s over, this waiting is the worst.

To be honest ETWs and FTEs are all Temporary at Nike. There has been so many layoffs the last 10 years, neither are permanent. The only differences are the benefits and severance. I was both an ETW and FTE lucky enough to never get laid off from either but the annual layoff nervousness is real especially in GT where every 6 months they begin a new restructuring project. Nothing sticks for more that a few months ever in GT. Great people really bad and incompetent Sr Directors and VP who are only about playing the Nike game of Bait and switch an smoke and mirrors. Nothing ever Really gets done at that level. That said I do miss the people ..

We all know what the T in ETW stands for. But some of them have been here for years and years, being assigned work, doing well at it, making friends and become invaluable to the team. They get married, start families, buy homes. To them it's a job, with the hope of being converted someday. So if that contract is ended, I think calling it a layoff is valid and no less impactful to them personally than if they were a FTE. Empathy, people...try and show some.

I understand why the ETW’s would call it a layoff. Nike has been notorious over the years to bring in full time ETW’s to manage mission critical work due to limitations in headcount numbers by the executive team. When the money exists and you can’t hire FTE’s you do what you have to do to keep the ship afloat.

ETWs are temporary. When there is a need, you hire more and when you don’t need, you discontinue the contract. Temporary workers being removed is not a layoff.

ETW is not permanent, get over it. It’s tough time for the company, time to make hard choices

ETW isn’t a layoff. An ETW is flexible help as in can flex it up or flex down as needed. It’s what you sign up for no matter what you hope it leads to or how long you stay there. An ETW is never an employee nor should be expected to be treated like one. This is the same at any company. People at Nike are just more sensitive it seems about it. Work at other company’s and you will see Nike is GENEROUS.

As for FTE it’s only speculated 52 weeks a year every year. If you are concerned go do something else more secure. Until then do your best and hope for a turn around.

Why worry about what you can’t control or influence?

@a9 I get what you are saying, and I can't speak for ETW's, but the ones I know are here in hopes of being hired on directly. Many have put in YEARS here. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't. So while they are external contractors, I know most would like to be hired on and that's why they stick it out. Losing your position, contract or FTE, is a layoff in my book.

Idk why we call it “layoffs.” ETWs aren’t part of Nike and are just assigned to us from their company.

The ETWs I know who were impacted were informed last Wednesday and are staying on contract until June 13. I have no idea if it's over. Maybe FTEs are next.
