Over the last decade, I have dedicated much of myself and my talents as a Registered Nurse leader at UHC. When I started 10 years ago, I thought I couldn’t have a better job. I was a nurse working from home while raising a growing family. My position allowed for flexibility, kept me motivated, and was part of my overall identity. I was surprised to find what seemed to be the perfect fit in such a large corporation. Sure, there was management turnover and minor changes. However, my team and I felt that no matter what challenges we faced, we wanted to work through them and improve. UHC utilized our team to train other teams on our process and the innovations we had developed. This was the honeymoon stage of my position and, by far, the best work years of my career.

About three years ago, there seemed to be a significant shift in management attitude, changes in company policy notifications, and an increase in workload, with multiple issues emerging that the company refused to address. Most importantly, there was a dramatic change in United Healthcare’s attitude towards its own employees. It felt like the wind had been taken out of my sails in several areas of my job, and there was no support from management to fix it. Management turnover increased, and leadership complained they never had enough time to give. There was a lack of care or concern for the little things employees do that contribute to the overall success. Company-wide, morale seemed to decline. Nobody wanted to give their all or continue to grow with the company. There were no annual GEM awards or Bravo monetary reimbursements, handwritten birthday cards, thank-you notes from upper management, or acknowledgment of Nurses Week.

From the start of the decade to now, I feel like I have been watching the Titanic sink. Based on conversations with employees, it seems there’s no steady solution. The focus of upper management and the CEO has changed drastically. Jobs are continually being cut. There is more micromanagement in everything we do, leading to a lack of overall trust in United’s employees. I am witnessing nurses with over 20 years of experience in the field brought to tears over their uncertain retirement prospects. While every new CEO comes in motivated to make a change, more adjustments seem to drive employees away and encourage them to retaliate and whistleblow (as seen on this site).

Mr./Mrs./Miss CEO 1, 2, 3… please consider donating a fraction of your million-dollar salary to the hardworking and deserving employees who have been dedicated to this company for decades. Bring back the bonuses, acknowledgments, the old clock-in system, and the overall personal touch that once helped us thrive. Stop focusing on your own interests, your big houses, the denied authorizations, and the amount of money you can save the company while laying off employees. Revitalize the American dream in health insurance, and your employees will love you back.

The cultural values we all had to be trained on extensively have completely gone to the waysude. People first has been touted and is simply not true, it's profit first! Our members and employees are suffering because of our cultural shift. Sad!!

@OP 100% agree. I was just saying this same thing to a coworker a few weeks ago. I was proud (and still am) to say I worked at UHC. I still love the work I do, the fact that I work from home and I like all of my coworkers/managers. However managers are dropping like flies and moving teams or demoting themselves. They are trying really hard to micromanage us. All it does is cause stress, I have had multiple jobs added to my job, more is coming because they keep absorbing teams with no where for the work to go. It’s ridiculous. This company is digging their own grave and it’s sad to see it. I’m hoping it changes because I know a lot of good people looking to leave healthcare altogether because this is happening at all of the companies.

@f5 Wow only working 2 hours a day and actually admitting it. I always worked well over my 8 hrs and as a salaried employee there was no extra for that. Sadly I was still laid off. Proof that they actually let the real workers go.

I inadvertently clicked on the Anthem section. The experience there, as well as the employee sentiment, is 100% parallel to that of United Health employees. Seems the whole industry is fighting the same battle and coming up with the same painful solutions. Just a sad commentary on the current state of today’s world.

I agree and it all started with Witty pounding and punishing employees left and right as he tried to boost the stock on all of our backs.

I hate this company with every breath as it's become a monster in the last few years internally. The only solace is that in lieu of raises, I just don't work anymore. You'd be lucky to find me work more than two hours a day. I could have remained a productive, profitable employee, but instead I'm gonna drag you down like you dragged me down.

How much of this toxicity coincides with increase in Indian involvement. Not exactly a racist but ya know I'm not so sure anymore. I remember interviewing years ago for the first time and being reassured that in spite of the team being entirely Indian I didn't have to worry. I was like well I wasn't worried before but now I am. Few months and whoa boy wtf. It was like there was this massive game underlying everything we did. Work sort of got done but I felt like a stuck pig running around a rodeo, it was clear I was the token white boy and even that was too much for the group. Offshore workers I had no real problems with, it was the onshore that wanted me friggin gone.

You just evoked something to me that I've been trying to put my finger on, so thank you. I also have felt like I've had the perfect job and couldn't believe my luck. Flexibility, salary that felt competitive, ability to raise my family, remote work that felt impactful. These things have been the driving force behind, not quitting as I haven't wanted to lose this opportunity. But it's not what it used to be and I don't think it's a phase anymore. The culture of UHC has shifted. It's chaotic and toxic the same way other places I worked previously were and probably won't be better for years given all the bad press. Time to consider other opportunities.

This is so true it has been going on longer then I thought now I look back. Yes I remember when the Bravo's were worth money and then they took that away. On my laid off paperwork it said i was laid off for 'lack of work'. Strange thing about this is I was swamped. Sending claims back in hopes they would finally be paid. This was my forever job and someone with no heart ran it into the ground.

This definitely WAS a place I thought I would retire from. The inconsistencies and mismanagement has created a place i am no longer familiar with. The captain of this ship sank it and leadership scrambled in all the wrong ways to keep it afloat. Sad shame.
