Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Why isn't there a company-wide hiring freeze?

They keep bringing in new faces like everything's fine, even though we all know layoffs are far from over. Why? A hiring freeze combined with attrition could easily make layoffs completely unnecessary.

Because children of the leadership are still graduating from college and other relatives are looking for work..

Because that's what led to the large gap we had in demographics.

Because Chevron is too insular. The need outside talent badly (skills, network, culture).

Because we have to hire the kids of upper management and executive staff, did you forget about that?

I don't recall in my Chevron career (measured in decades) that Chevron has ever had a "hiring freeze". What is sinister this time is that MW wants to get rid of all the high-salary older employees (experience-rich, not up to date on latest technologies) and replace them with book-smart, experience-poor cheap college hires. Gee, look how well that worked in 2020!

We are hiring for the skills we need and firing for those no longer needed.

My selection rep (IT) has told me that multiple roles that would otherwise be a good fit, e.g. analytics and product owner type positions, are being held for outside hiring and will not be filled during selections. If you combine those with the ones that the selection reps say are being held for the PDC, there are really few roles available.

We’re always going to be hiring because of natural attrition.

If you’re a bottled water company and one of your delivery drivers leaves you still need someone to drive the truck and deliver the bottles.

There’s hiring and HIRING. We’re doing the former and always will be.

This is a good point. But they’ll tell you they did this before in the 90s (I think) and it “turned out badly”. (Or some cr-p like that, had a manger say that during the Alpha ROM of 2015. Also happened to be first time I heard of EB, who led all of the project alpha cuts.) New year, same sh-t.
