Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

AXG purge started?

Former architecture and discrete GPU HW GMs are leaving. Does that concede the failure of Raja’s discrete GPU efforts? Why’s Raja not held accountable? Why are the SW GMs (MR, LP, ST …) still here?

It would be nice to be able to enter a large market like discreet graphics and hpc, but when you are decades behind super strong competitors it could be futile.

Raja I don't know, but is it possible AMD pushed him out? Maybe like Qualcomm pushed out Murthy? Intel has long and poor track record of hiring sr outside people.

Check out the poor memory flow design, Arc Alchemist can't feed the memory, its comparable to an ATI Radeon HD 5850, an 13 year old card, and that old card does better at memory utilization...

There is a lot of fundamental changes that need to happen to make ARC competitive, currently the design is handicapping itself.

According to an online article, Raja took a leave near the end of his AMD employment because Lisa Su cut budget on his projects. Then Lisa Su took over his big department. Some AMD people were sad to lose a great leader who decided to join Intel. The article also mentioned Raja liked that Intel gave him a lot of resources. Guess things change...

“operating losses for Q3 were $378 Million”
How is the accounting done here? How much revenue or profit does integrated GPU make? Is that included in AXG P&L?

Likely more work will be moved to low cost geo. Likely more programs get delayed. Likely Intel GPU is still subpar. History repeats itself.

HC is associated with programs. Except for integrated gpu, all Raja’s pipe dreams require up-front and long term investment. If he cut those long term programs, there is not much growth opportunities. But, what else can he cut?

He will need to cut some programs as well. Trimming $300M from HC alone would be about 1500 people.

"Not sure where he will cut the expenses.".. obviously from HC. There is only so much AXG can cut and, in these circumstances, HC is the only fat they can go after.

The GPU group bloated when RaJa took the helm, to fulfill his pipe dream of breaking into data center and supercomputer markets. Obviously the ROI is low. Not sure where he will cut the expenses. One thing for sure: he has wrong vision and poor execution. FUBAR. He should get fired.

Trying to enter discrete graphics vs. Nvidia is asking for a bloody nose... Years ago Jensen Huang said he was going to open up a can of Whoop A-s on Intel graphics. Mission accomplished.

@vya.. it is not about "profit" but budget and for 2023(starting now in Q4) they need to cut ~ $300M.

If I was in AXG I would be working on my resume this evening...

20% reduction?
Unlikely for AXG. One of the only profitable groups this quarter.

and Raja just move his group QGS for Nov 3 form Nov 8. Most likely he will announce a 20% reduction on HC.

Word is it that his budget was cut down 200-300M for next year and almost 50% for Q4 2022 so he will need to do few rounds of layoff to meet his new budget numbers.
