Cigna Peeps with Severance - did u report to Unemployment Agency

i heard you can’t double dip (collect severance & unemployment), atleast in my state so planning to start talking to unemployment agency after my severance is done.

however, upon research, i found out about this:
Filing for Unemployment Benefits:
• You should file for unemployment benefits immediately after your last day of work, regardless of any severance pay.
• Delaying your application can result in missed benefits for weeks you’re eligible.

Example Scenario
Let’s say you receive a severance of $35,000, and your weekly wage was $2,500:
• Deductible Severance: $35,000 - $27,319.34 = $7,680.66
• Weeks of Allocation: $7,680.66 ÷ $2,500 ≈ 3.07 weeks
• Impact: Your unemployment benefits would be delayed for approximately 3 weeks.

mind sharing your unemployment benefit experience? are you collecting unemployment benefits while receiving severance? if so, from what state are you?

In Ohio you can't double dip. You report your unemployment, but can't file a claim for unemployment until your severance runs out.

@c0 In CT, the law was changed in 2024 and you can no longer collect unemployment and severance. You know have to let severance run out to begin collecting unemployment and can collect unemployment for 26 weeks. I know others who waited a month after the 26 weeks were up and were able to collect again.

In CT you can't 'double dip' severance and unemployment. You file for unemployment when severance runs out. Keep in mind, if you find other employment while still collecting severance and your severance goes into 2026, an additional salary will most likely affect your tax bracket and you would owe additional taxes on what you already made! There is typically a 2% jump in tax brackets but there is also a 6-8% jump in a tax bracket too!

to the poster hyperventelating that he/she/they are paying the other poster’s property tax, calm down.

it isn’t your money. google “who pays for unemployment benefits”.

this is also one of the reasons why big companies opted for outsourcing, because they dont have to contribute for a full time employee’s unemployment, and insurance, and can get a programmer for “buy 1 get 2 free”

This depends on the state.

And to the person saying they didn’t want to pay off the person’s property taxes (implying that taxpayers are on the hook for unemployment) - maybe you don’t understand unemployment.

The employer pays into this insurance, not the taxpayer. You know - the same employer that sent you packing! So let this person get every last dollar out of Cigna they can.

Assuming severance pay is equal to your actual previous pay, I don't get how you're eligible for both Unemployment and actual pay at the same time, and I don't feel great that I'm paying off your property taxes.

When I was let go in 2023 I was working in CT. I had to send the unemployment office a copy of my severance package as part of my initial intake, which I did. I was able to collect unemployment while also collecting severance as well. I banked every last penny of unemployment and today I still use it to pay property taxes so it was a good thing for me.

her’s the complete text from chatgpt pertaining to computation

How Severance Affects Unemplyment Compensation (UC) Benefits

law stipulates that severance pay exceeding 40% of the state’s average annual wage is considered deductible from your UC benefits. For 2025, this threshold is $27,319.34. The amount above this threshold is allocated over the weeks immediately following your separation, based on your full-time weekly wage.

Example:
• Severance Received: $35,000
• Deductible Amount: $35,000 - $27,319.34 = $7,680.66
• Weekly Wage: $2,500
• Weeks of Allocation: $7,680.66 ÷ $2,500 ≈ 3.07 weeks

In this scenario, your UC benefits would be delayed for approximately 3 weeks.

Why do you assume a severance of $35,000? I thought the severance is calculated as number of weeks of your salary, not a lump sum amount. Also don’t understand where the Deductible Severance came from.
