Nike Contractors Laid Off Today

A number of Nike contractors were laid off today with very little warning. We were told the contracts were getting renewed, but they cut about 1/3 of the data managers. None of our managers were involved in this decision; it was all upper management going down a spreadsheet and cutting people purely due to cost.

Sure, that's really hard, but Q4 numbers are rolling in, tariff drama continues, and decisions need to be done swiftly for the health of the business and the sake of everyone else on this boat.

Contractors are completely vulnerable to these situations and planning cycles, that's why they're contractors. They can be let go any time their contract is up for renewal. This is the healthiest mindset you can have as a contractor, instead of creating expectations or thinking the company owes you anything but clarity when your contract term approaches. I'd argue even FTEs should have this mindset.

For every ETW in IDSA I can name 3 lazy schmoozing FTEs with sh---y attitudes weighing down the squad who need a whole sprint to write a simple join statement. Who will the FTEs strong arm into doing all their work now? I get the logistics of how/why managers and directors weren't consulted, doesn't change how it would be nice to see merit factored into any of these decisions for once.

Wish we could substitute some of the FTEs in those teams with the impacted ETWs. Total waste of salary if you ask me

@a2+1j the difference is that you can clearly see who on your team is performing and how they're performing. In this case, a lot of the hard workers are shafted while the talkers schmooze their way into promotions and staying.

If permission has to be asked to make reductions everyone would complain, fight why their space is critical, and nothing ever get reduced. This is how businesses are run unfortunately. It is kind of like the GM of a team and you are the Manager or Coach. You play with the team you are given but you don’t always decide or get to give input on the team itself.
