Plans for expats

What has happened to expats in the previous layoffs?
We have a lot of them here in MBU, and most are here just long enough to check a box.
I wonder if CEP means preference for a lower cost local over the expensive expat?

@zj+1jvbmd2t9 Definitely expensive, useless is a bit extreme.

We're in the business of making decisions. If leadership trusts a person to run a capital program, then it doesn't really matter if they're paid $400k or $600k per year (fully burdened). They'll be more than worth it.

The challenge with Chevron isn't compensation. The challenge is lack of productivity, over-staffing, and dated/stale skills. If the expat helps solve that problem, bring them on-board.

You have a “new” asset that is being on-boarded to COP. I would expect no meaningful repatriations until Houston feels that it is running the Conoco way. Two years down the line when the legacy issues are ironed out, it may get a look and will see some repatriations.

There are a lot of expats outside the US as well. I know that first-hand because we have several in my country. I was told they are here because they are hipots. The new one we have here now has not impressed us, but must be costing a fortune.

We need to take measures to reduce any unnecessary costs. No need to have expatriates in the US other than training so they can repatriate and lead in their home countries. Keeping them here longer term serves no business purpose and can result in bad situations like the new CFO or the decade long disaster we had as president of the L48.

If you are not a HiPo, they were typically getting repatriated…then the local (home country) BU tries to find a place for them.
