People always say to apply for roles where you’re already a strong fit—usually meaning your current level. But I’m aiming for roles that challenge me, where I can grow and truly contribute. Who else isn’t afraid to step up and compete for something bigger?

this is the hunger games, swing big and you might go home!
Get real—when has reaching the next PSG level ever been a real challenge? In fact, with every PSG increase, my work-life balance has only improved. Of course, if you’re making a drastic career shift, like going from carpentry to brain surgery, that’s a different story. But more often than not, the high PSG roles I see are jobs that the average Engineering joe in the company could easily handle/exceed.
It is a selection, not a PDC cycle. I might burn a slot for one higher…but that depends on my options when the org chart comes out.
Posting for more challenging roles is great but make sure you have at least one safe pick if the outcome you want most is staying with the company.
downshifting everyone to lower PSG jobs while retaining the same salary or salary freeze
It makes ZERO difference what you select. You’ve already been dog eared for a position (or not). Last reorg I was slotted in a position I didn’t select (out of 4). This whole exercise is just performative CYA for Chevron. The only thing you can make known that will definitely hurt you, is to say you aren’t able to relocate.
By all means, be ambitious and swing for a role a grade higher than where you are, or even a different role in the same PSG. You can always use your remaining preferences on the safe bet.
But I have a strong hunch that most names are already assigned to a box, but there’s always room for some movement.
Go for it. Best of luck.
Ha, clearly this is your first re-org with that type of thinking...
A lot of people tried to do that in the 26-27 selections and swung and missed.
The difference is that those 26s can now apply to 3 more jobs at 25.
If you swing and miss 3 times with that go big or go home mentality, you might just get laid off
And you will end up getting what they want to give you, if anything at all.
I’m with you on that. Playing it safe is for the birds. What, apply to the same role and remain stagnant? I rather go up a level, struggle, and grow than not.
