Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

If you're over a certain age, you're in trouble

From what I can see, most of the people being laid off are at least 40. Sure, there are a few exceptions, but that's exactly what they are, exceptions.

I wonder if the other oil and gas companies will pickup us? Lots of experience that they don’t realise they let go. Any one know what’s happening in the wider industry? My wife and I both work in O&G so do our kids.

If things last long it will trickle down to other sectors. We have about 6-7 of salary in almost liquid assets ie money markets and our home is paid off. What do we do if this lasts longer. I realise our situation is a little better than others but it’s very stressful.

Sara P, Alex, John, Pierre, please go back to Facebook trolling and try to be mindful that real people have lost their jobs. Not everything is about you.

As a younger employee I’m thankful we are okay those being targeted are our senior citizen co-workers ie those over 50 who should retire. This is still a great company. We should not bash the hand that feeds us. The company has always been very good to us all these years.

The retirement home business will start to bo-m as our senior citizen employees retire. I’ve heard many are planning to move to B.C. and Ontario which should make housing a lot more affordable for the rest of us.

Who says this has anything to do with climate change? This is all about shoveling every last dime to shareholders. Any money that goes to environmental issues was never going to see the employees anyway.

I’m over 40 and look 10 years older than I should from the stress of o&g and they kept me. I might be the equivalent of a DEI hire for old people but I’m going to take it

We all have to click our shoes and say the USA will continue to buy our dirty oil at a deep discount.

Daniel smith is doing her best to help Alberta and our oil industry. We will have a referendum to separate and join the USA.

No more worrying about the “woke agenda”, “no more cbc”, no more carbon to worry about, no more the rest of Canada. Lower income tax and we can get rid of the GST

It's all about money. Last of the experienced that cost money. Then complain when nothing is reliable or profitable. VP's are clueless, but their spouses still have the cushy WFH jobs.

They need to lose a certain amount of head count (ie Costs) so thats the biggest driver.

Can confirm from what I've seen there have been no terminations for anyone under 40.
