So several people have the flu (7) …2 have gone to the ER .
Several have gone to work sick with fevers.
Do they receive points too? Even if they are full time?

Do you still get occurrences if you die?

@br+1. Bravo. The previous post is trying to insinuate that Belk, Hein Park and KKR actually give a sh-t about the associates.

Yes make sure to contact belk hr from your hospital bed. Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm but not between 1 pm and 2pm because they will be at lunch . Also make sure to have all appropriate paperwork on hand while you are in the hospital, perhaps a nurse or orderly can assist you in collecting all the proper documentation. You can have your family or spouse contact corporate for you, even though they don’t work for the company and have no idea who to contact or what numbers to call, that makes perfect sense. Next time just have the ambulance stop by Belk on the way to the hospital so you can get everything sorted out ahead of time. More than likely the pea brain H.R. will make some mistake and you wont get the FMLA anyway.

Let’s be serious here, any company is going to not only care about their associates well being, but they also have to care about that associates position and having it covered when that associate is unable to be at work. It is the associates responsibility sick, hospitalized or taking care of family to do the necessary steps it takes for the company also. If they are unable to do so a family member needs to relay what is going on to the company. Everyone on here is acting like Belk is out for all employees and that is just not the case. They have a company to run and we as associates know this.

@bc+1 The vast majority of FMLA applications are to care for another person with a serious illness. Like over 80%. If someone suddenly becomes ill and is unable to work, they are very unlikely to have the time or ability to contact their corporate HR and inquire about FMLA, especially if they have been hospitalized suddenly. Why would Belk put associates and other employees through so much red tape about a simple hospital stay? That sounds like the company is intentionally trying to make things difficult on workers.

FMLA ALSO applies if the associate is having surgery and needs to be off for a period of time to recover. Also for illness/ medical treatments and needs to be off for a length of time. It is not just to be off to care for family members. If you need it for yourself they are required to let you take it without risking your job.

  1. If someone is in the hospital, they should not have to apply for FMLA, that is typically used when someone needs time away to care for a severely terminal and/or ill spouse, partner, parent, or close family member.
  1. A valid doctors note may not be accepted by management or the HRBP but it certainly will be accepted by the judge if the employee sues for wrongful termination. Contact any employment attorney about that. Belk will have to pay out or settle with the employee.
  1. If HRBP has the final ‘sign off’ on a corrective action form without talking to the employee, they are just taking the word of the store manager who may be bias, or have some type of grievance with the employee, so why not cut out the middle man? Just have the HRBP talk directly to the associate in the first place. That would make more sense.

Belk runs on occurrences. One day missed is one occurrence. If you miss consecutive days for the same reason, that is also counted as one occurrence. A doctor’s note won’t excuse you from an absence, it will just show that missed those days for the same reason. If you have an ongoing medical condition that is the cause of missing work, I would suggest that you apply for a partial FMLA so that doctors appointments, late arrivals and absences don’t accrue further occurrences. Your HRBP (not the HR in store) is the person that signs off on all corrective action forms so if you disagree with it, they are the ones to contact.
