Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Bill says our future depends on the success of F-150 Lightning….

“The company's heir William Ford Junior, also said this year that the company's $40,000 F-150 'lightning' truck needs to be a success or it will put the company at risk of failing. “

The Lightning is a failure. It is unprofitable and can’t tow a trailer 150 miles. We are doomed.

Ford CNE makes cameo in EV video - spoiler alert, doesn't receive the most flattering comment. Video is an interesting watch and nice and short to the point.

We re screwed then. Lightning production will lag behind ICE for years. Plus no true truck user wants one. Grocery getters? Sure. But if you haul or tow more than 50 miles one way then you'd be a mo--n to buy a Lightning.

Ford is screwed with or without the Lightning.

All I can say ........... if they want to succeed, they need to price them the same as diesel trucks because they are hyping them just like the diesels.

In my opinion the whole house charger should be included in the standard price and not an option.

They also need to add a lifetime warranty for the batteries at free replacement for as long as you own the truck.

If they did all that, then they might have a good chance of staying #1 with trucks.

There could be a huge aftermarket business to retrofit used EV trucks (Lightnings) with ICE powertrains if replacement batteries are too much expense. If we compare the cost of a 29,000 USD battery with an ICE retrofit, there is a cost save the can be seen along with a business case for the retrofit from EV to ICE. This type of FWD thinking is what is needed to succeed in the future of mobility.....

Can someone tell me what the growth strategy is with ev and ford…ok build ev cars and sell services, but do you think ford would be #1 and increase their best year ever by 40percent or more? I don’t think so. Use critical thinking change is coming yes but what is the rush???? Can they even replace their losing current business..I mean they really are not a global company anymore…only high priced vehicles not sold everywhere. Lost in china Russia India Europe Latin America…only n America is keeping her afloat

So you shouldn't buy them in an areas prone to flooding, extreme cold or long distances. Not sure what parts of the country is left?

The costs for a practical EV truck will continue to significantly rise.
Ford is still in the infancy of EV design and learning.
Other companies have realized that Ev truck/car undercarriages must be waterproof enough to be able to float; braking system seriously beefed up to accommodate battery weight; battery compartments seriously beefed up to prevent issues with accidents; etc
All these discoveries from real world testing doubled the initial cost estimates of 50K for a base Ev truck. Let’s face it 100k for a base EV truck is a non-starter especially when it is well known that there will be no market for a used EV truck. Unlike used ice trucks that are still in use 50 years on.

Haha……keep building cars that make no money in a small amount….guaranteed to go out of business no matter the stock structure. …ford will finally fall this recession…oh I mean “merge” with another company…..just like the consulting companies planned….. now the potential buyer should be identified

Not a Ford employee here. I don't know if the company is at risk of failing, but it is a big bet.

I looked into the Lightning. It sounds great. Thing is:

  1. you can't actually buy it for $40K. Dealer's are marking them way up.
  2. what you get in the supposed 40K isn't that great. They reserve the better feature for higher trim levels (and WAY more $$$) or for fleet purchasers. What's up with that?
  3. The whole battery thing is still iffy. It will cost for a charger. Even more for a fast charger. It will cost to get the charger installed. Ka-ching. Ka-ching. What happens when the battery wears out?
  4. I watched the recent Florida hurricane on the news. I'm thinking, would I want to be evacuate in this vehicle? Heck no. What would be worse than the battery dying while I'm on the highway trying to evacuate?

I heard there was a Detroit Autoshow but the auto companies wouldn't open the EV hoods / (trunks) to let you see what's there. Maybe it isn't as "simple" as they'd like us to believe.

I'd be buying it as a "gentlemen" truck. Folks that would buy it as a real "work" truck probably have an even lower opinion of the Lightning, especially as you mentioned the towing issue.

So, yeah, if other people think like me, Ford might be in trouble. Or maybe, if they are really committed to this, they will be the first major adopter and a winner. I dunno.
