Optimism here…I remember hearing several years ago that employees could request that HR put together a departure package for voluntary separation. Does anyone know about the history of this, and, if true, if it’s still something that could occur?

@OP Yes, I know MANY people who have 'asked' their manager to consider them for job elimination and they have usually gotten packages within 6 months of requesting it! However, this April's job eliminations were done higher up than by middle management. I was told HR created lists based off of Job Title and Salary. Then upper management slashed and in many cases without input from middle management. But, usually if you have a good manager who is willing to work with you they will inform upper management that they have an employee who would like to be considered for job elimination and they usually can be.
Depends on your situation, supervisor, and the department. They are more likely if you are close to retirement and a tenured employee.
