Thread regarding Open Text Corp. layoffs

Did Mark go into the office 3 days this week?

I don't think he did, he's busy with his feet up in business class flying to random countries like he's on vacation.

Time for a chat with HR, Mark...

He went 2000 miles to make a phone call. You think going to the office three days a week is stupid? This is next level.

If you want a sensible CEO, we would need to promote Paul Duggan. But don’t see that happening.

Nah. While I disagree, @az+1jt8p0vm2 has a valid legit take, from a more sensible world. Pity we don't live in one anymore.

The "dark triad" of personality traits—Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy—has increasingly been a focal point of research in organizational behavior and leadership studies. Evidence suggests that CEOs exhibiting these traits can have a significant negative impact on firm performance for several reasons:

  1. Machiavellianism: This trait is characterized by manipulation, deceit, and a focus on self-interest. CEOs with high Machiavellian tendencies may prioritize personal gain over the welfare of the organization, leading to unethical decision-making, reduced employee morale, and a toxic corporate culture.
  1. Narcissism: Narcissistic leaders often have an inflated sense of self-importance and a strong need for admiration. They may make decisions based on their desire for recognition rather than the best interests of the company. This can lead to a lack of collaboration, resistance to feedback, and an inability to build effective teams, all of which can hinder organizational performance.
  1. Psychopathy: Psychopathic traits include a lack of empathy, impulsivity, and superficial charm. CEOs with psychopathic tendencies may be more likely to engage in risky behaviors and make short-term decisions that can jeopardize long-term success. Their inability to connect with employees and stakeholders can also result in high turnover rates and a negative corporate reputation.

Implications for Organizations

  • Decision-Making: Dark triad traits can skew decision-making processes, leading to choices that favor personal agendas over strategic business needs.
  • Corporate Culture: Such leaders may foster a culture of fear and competition rather than collaboration, stifling innovation and employee engagement.
  • Reputation and Ethics: Companies led by individuals with these traits may face reputational damage, legal issues, and ethical dilemmas, which can ultimately tarnish the brand and impact financial performance.
  • Accountability: A leader's dark triad traits can create a lack of accountability within the organization, as these individuals may deflect blame and avoid responsibility for poor outcomes.

Conclusion

The presence of the dark triad traits in CEOs can create significant challenges for organizations, impacting not only financial performance but also employee satisfaction and corporate ethics. As such, boards and investors may want to consider personality assessments as part of the hiring and evaluation process for top executives, aiming to promote leadership that fosters a positive and productive organizational environment.

You can’t have corporate America without CEOs

Well stated post. Which I disagree with almost, but not quite, entirely.

A CEO loses the benefit of the doubt when he is led in by marching bands and shares the stage in Vegas with Elvis impersonators and cheerleaders.

He is not just a man trying to save his job. He's just an a--hole.
