At the end of the day, you're just a number on a spreadsheet to them. When push comes to shove, they'll always choose profits over people - that's just how publicly traded companies operate. Your manager might be a decent human being, but they don't call the shots when corporate starts swinging the axe. The sooner you realize no one's looking out for you but yourself, the better off you'll be.

I think they are getting rid of all the people with knowledge so they have less whistleblowers for all illegal stuff they are starting to do.
Co workers are not your friends is hard lesson to learn here in corporate America.
I wonder how long the lag is between the time they lay off x% of the workforce and the time when they realize that there is no way to make up for the lost work capacity and business knowledge that they jettisoned in exchange for short term improvement in market sentiment/stock price.
If youre manager is decent theyre likely trying to look out for you, but this is all happening at a higher level than most managers.
