The uncertain macroeconomic backdrop is prompting businesses to rethink their spending in an attempt to get the best possible returns on their investments, International Business Machines CFO James Kavanaugh said Wednesday.

The shift could pose a benefit to the tech company. “When you think about a very dynamic and uncertain environment, clients are focused on cost efficiency, cash preservation and liquidity,” Kavanaugh said. “Our automation portfolio plays extremely well to that.”

Sales across IBM’s automation portfolio rose 14% in the first quarter, helping buoy the company’s software segment 7% higher, to $6.34 billion.

This increase more than offset IBM’s consulting and infrastructure segments, which saw sales fall 2% and 6%, respectively.

Consulting, which logged sales of $5.07 billion, has largely stabilized, Kavanaugh said. The unit has notched falling sales as companies have reprioritized away from discretionary-based projects. Still, Kavanaugh believes the company’s early adoption of AI will help it in the long term.

“The key for us is going to be continuing to win where we have an early leadership position in generative AI,” he said. “We’re on the front-end of that curve.”

Infrastructure sales fell 6%, to $2.89 billion. IBM is at the tail-end of a three-year product cycle, though it has plans to launch in June its next-generation z17 mainframe, a device designed to allow companies to run multiple operations simultaneously and support big datasets, artificial intelligence and large-language models.

“The value proposition is extremely strong,” Kavanaugh said, noting the new device is expected to contribute about one point of growth to the company’s topline in 2025.

For the year, IBM backed its outlook for constant currency revenue growth of at least 5%. It noted that current foreign exchange rates would result in an up to 1.5% tailwind to growth.

The company continues to expect about $13.5 billion in free cash flow for the full year, compared with analyst views for $13.6 billion.

For the second-quarter, IBM guided for sales between $16.4 billion and $16.75 billion, ahead of the $16.31 billion expected by analysts.

The outlooks came as the company reported higher-than-expected profit and revenue in the first quarter.

For its three months ended March 31, IBM posted a profit from continuing operations of $1.05 billion, or $1.12 a share, compared with $1.58 billion, or $1.69 a share, in the same period a year earlier.

Adjusted per-share earnings of $1.60 came in above the $1.42 that analysts surveyed by FactSet expected.

Total revenue edged 0.5% higher to $14.54 billion, topping the $14.39 billion that analysts modeled.

Let's talk about cost savings myth. It's never a 1:1 replacement of USA worker for Indian engineer. As a previous IBM manager, I have seen several worst cost scenarios. A team of 3 PM's replaced by over 30 PM's and they still couldn't handle the load with any speed or quality. For systems engineers, which should be plentiful in India, the average allowed backfill ratio is around 2:1, but the Indian replacements can only do less than a third of the work together. The absolute worst case I saw was a couple years ago. 1 senior US person with their server build scripts was replaced with over 100 Indian engineers to build everything manually. That whole offering eventually fell apart, they blamed the US senior engineer who was no longer there for it falling apart without him! I could go on about the cost savings myth, I'm sure others could as well. As a share holder while I worked at IBM, I focused on the stock analysis and dividend stability, not the insanity that came from executive decision making.

You want to see more layoffs... let's get rid of 30-50% of management.

Some organizations are on their knees after major layoffs in the past 5+ years, barely having enough people to perform engagements. As a reminder, managers do not perform engagements and this is the people delivering the services who are bringing in the revenue to the company.

Most managers are totally useless and a cost to the company. Let's purge...

The belief that you can replace someone that has 10, 20, 30+ years of experience with an out-of-college kid is just totally nuts.

As always, great job IBM! You are digging your own grave.

Wall Street analysts and investors aren’t impressed with free cash flow allocation and want to see more layoffs in order to make IBM stock attractive

It might be futile to argue with your naive logic.
Do you think, you are buying tomatoes from a vegetable stand ? Indian tomatoes are 5 times cheaper than American tomatoes, so, I can make a cheaper tomato sauce.
Even, among US based engineers, not all engineers are the same. Less than 10% of the engineering population are worth to be called engineers. A large portion of the rest are stupid, cheaters, boot lickers ....
Only the future can answer, what is the distribution among Indian engineers ?

Overhead cost of an IBM employee in NA is way too expensive compared to one in India: possible 1 to 5 or more; so the maths is easy

Krishna: “The AI (All Indians) strategy at IBM which consists in moving jobs from western hemisphere to India with pennies on the dollar using meat grinder sweatshops process and younger energetic motivated darker slaves, is the only way to save IBM from bankruptcy ; it’s about cleaning up the swamp and it’s making me rich in the process ; that’s why I was hired by the board: capitalism is beautiful “

Why would IBM Leadership announce that IBM is really failing at AI (compared to other hi tech companies) and have all the clients depart en masse ?? They are trying to save the sinking Titanic. So Krabanaugh and Alvind fudge the figures to make it sound like they have a healthy company going forward. The reality of course is that things are falling apart at the seams and jobs are going to India without having anyone knowing what the he-l they are doing there, except collecting a paycheck.
