Thread regarding Illumina Inc. layoffs

Roche investing $50B in the US… Meanwhile, Illumina keeps cutting US jobs

Hard not to notice the contrast here. Roche just announced a $50 billion investment to build a massive new facility in Indiana—a huge commitment to the U.S. biotech space and American jobs.

And then there's Illumina. While other companies are doubling down on U.S. innovation, Illumina keeps bleeding talent stateside and quietly expanding operations in India. It’s not just a one-off layoff anymore—this is becoming a trend.

What does everyone else think about this?

Roche better invest or they will face 100 percent tariffs. Its not out of choice they choose to invest, its an existential threat.

@OP+1jshwqt48, interesting point. In my opinion, this is an apples and oranges comparison. To be honest, more like an apple and a blue whale comparison. The 12/31/2024 Roche Balance Sheet “Cash on Hand” alone, is 4.5 times the total Illumina 2024 Annual Revenue.[1][2]

Roche is an extremely profitable company; compare the Roche and Illumina Macrotrends Retained Earnings.[3][4] Page 40 of the Roche 2024 Results presentation shows the Pharmaceuticals Division sales.[5] For Roche, the $50B investment in the U.S. makes sense, considering the current macroeconomic environment.[6]🍎🐳🏭💊💉

Another post mentions UK R&D, this mentions Madison R&D and San Diego R&D has been impacted. Any possibility that the long term goal is to move R&D oversees as well?

I would expect Foster City to go before Madison

Makes me think about the future of the Madison site. Expanding in the Midwest makes a lot of sense- but instead they've laid off almost everyone in R&D in Madison. It's a fancy new building on a hill thats basically vacant. Will it get shut down?
