Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Headhunters, supervisors, and reorgs

I’m fortunate to be in a function that is in demand outside chevrons, and had a call with ahead hunter this morning. I mentioned this to my supervisor, and they were a bit surprised I was so candid. Why wouldn’t I take a call from prospective employers who value my skills? Should I just wait here and grovel for my own job? And that’s if I’m lucky enough that it still exists? Chevron is a great place to work, or was tbd kn the future - but it’s not the only place to work. It struck me during the call how demeaning it is to go through this process…

This is an eternal truth: once you decide to leave, or you have been approached for a job outside Chevron, or are talking with a headhunter, keep that process discreet. Do not use your office phone for any such communications. Do not use Company email. Do not use your Company computer for personal email. Do not tell your co-workers. For heaven's sake, do not tell your boss! You're branding yourself as disloyal and untrustworthy, no matter how well you think you get along with your boss. For professional positions, these discussions, interviews, salary negotiations, etc. can take months to iron out. You want to do this cleanly and professionally. Not to mention that in these times, your "other job" may not pan out, and Chevron just fast-tracked you to the layoff line.

@ad "It’s shocking to realize how abnormal it is to force people to apply for their own jobs…"

Look on the bright side. It is still better than your current job being eliminated, and you have to apply for a different job and compete with the incumbent.

I am also entertaining a position outside CVX with another O&G company. Pay and benefits are comparable plus they have no plans to offshore anything due to the nature of the business. Although I would prefer to stay, I just cannot take a chance with this reorg. Even if I survive this year, what will happen in 2026 when LC & MN get their wet dream of sending as many jobs to low cost locations as humanly possible?

Reading the responses here that you are a target or you’ve set yourself up for something less than desirable is so comical. It’s not that complicated, it’s not a game and people don’t care that much to create a running list of those who need retaliation. You do you.

I've discussed that type of thing with bosses that I know well. No problem. You guys are obsessed with the idea that everything is a conspiracy or emotions based. Like it's the girls softball team selection at middle school.
It's a business. They either need you or they don't. If you get laid off don't get all excited about it like they hurt you. It's required that they reduce numbers. It's a business plan that your supervisor likely has very little say so in. Get over yourselves.
BTW, you can be not worth a c.rap and you still have X years of CVX on your resume to work for you and that has historically meant a lot to prospective employers. Maybe not as much today but most of that is on you and on the individual. Your next employer can spot the people who snuck in by knowing someone or having the right look or demographic. And also they know the type of minorities who are sharp and indestructible. Many are. Good luck.

They’re hosting resume writing sessions and paying people to leave . They don’t care that you’re looking, they hope you are.

It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve told my boss I’ve been approached or been offered another position. Wouldn’t be the first time they have been surprised I left either.

I pretend that Chevron is my only option. That is what they want to hear. Anything less than going “hat-in-hand” and begging to be part of this re-org is not showing faith and dedication to the company.

You will be selected for a horrific job. Good luck.

Your supervisor was probably surprised for two reasons:

  1. Most people are jockeying to stay so to hear you not doing that was unexpected
  1. You didn’t already do AEOI which means you’re willing to quit without a package, which is also unexpected

I'm using this time to find a new role, I'm sure I'm not the only genius doing so, seems like plenty of good folk have already left for greener pastures.

OP by telling your management chain you have options in the pipeline, they may select you for a Chevron job position so you do not receive the severance package. You are a sly dog....

You went on the naughty list by telling your supervisor. Your perceived lack of loyalty will be rewarded in the selection process. Hope the headhunter is successful for you.
