Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

BTC expats to US getting upwards of $200K benefits .. what is going on?

A BTC expats in EMHC shared how during his entire stay in the US, which is he trying to extend beyond 2.5 years, Exxon will pay him his Indian salary AND in the US he gets multiple benefits including housing, car, insurance and other allowances/salary. Everything added together and then accounted for federal tax, this is equivalent of someone earning $200K-$300K before taxes in US. what is going on ..

No BTC engineers are needed in the USA. I bet there are now more BTC expats in the USA than expats in India.

There is no reason to bring Indians to the USA as expats. We have all the talent we need readily available in country.

@OP to correct you - we get a lump sum allowance since India salary can of course not cover costs here. That allowance is typically $5-9k a month depending on CL and family size for most of us. And we spend that almost entirely, you would know better about living cost here. The only savings compared to India is the salary component of India which we would have spent while living in India (30-40% of salary) but can save here since allowance pays for living in USA. Wouldn’t any expat expect some savings? Otherwise why would you move? USA to India or other countries- I know how much you make.

@ap school allowance is only for Louisiana. Otherwise expected to attend public school starting with K like all Americans
That being said, of course to live here, one with family (especially kid) would need at least $8-9k/month which we are not even getting. We are supplementing it with India salary but still on assignment to get the global experience. Not to mention hardships faced especially in initial few months. We don’t get credit cards easily since no USA credit history. Auto insurance and finance rates are super high - i pay $400 a month for insurance for 1 car. So we end up paying more than what a local would pay
Breakup of cost: $2.5k rent for a 2 bedroom apartment
Daycare cost: $1.5k, this becomes easy starting with K as public schools are free
Groceries: $1.5k
Insurance and car financing: $1k
Eat out, leisure, gas cost: $1k
Travel to India to visit family- once a year. Monthly normalized cost $700

Well, this is what we all want isn't it? Any employee in the US being paid the same no matter where you come from?

Or do you now suggest people from India can live on less in Houston? Because than you actually say we could all live on less and save the company a lot of money by replacing you with someone from India if you don't accept a lower salary .

@a6+1 The POINT is that the strategy is stupid.

It is well known with those who have access to the numbers that Indian expats are just as expensive as hiring an American. The idea is you train them and send them back to India then fire the Americans who trained them. The problem is ince an Indian sees America they will do everything they can to never go back to India. They will quit and go to grad school or try quit and get a different job b in the USA.

Just like any expat job your salary is augmented to "keep you whole" in the host country. You couldn't expect an Indian salary to support anyone while here in the states.

@a6+1jryvtkdg the point is that BTC is supposed to be low cost. Bringing over BTC expats that now cost more than HC10 employees is not cost reduction.

And if they have kids, they have the option of going to John Cooper on the company’s dime. With a few school-aged kids, that alone will tack on another $100K per year.

What's your point? Bangalore is growing and this is the cost of growing them. HC10 is dying in EM, the picture is clear with the UK layoffs.

This is the strategy.
