Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Firing people

I have been hearing that some locations have already started firing people. Not laying off, firing - as in, showing them the door without severance or warning. Is this actually happening? We have not lost anyone here yet, but I would not be surprised if it started soon.

YES this is 100% happening at Target. I am from Target #3291 Forest Ave Staten Island, NY. I was fired for ridiculous reasons immediately after an amazing yearly review and getting a raise. Shorty after this, me and 3 other co-workers were fired one by one. Their goal is to get rid of workers who have recently gotten a raise so they can hire new people in who will work for less, because the bosses get bonuses for who saves the company the most payroll. And yes, Target is an "at-will" employer, so they can fire you for anything, and even for no reason at all, even if you are the best worker. They don't care about you. They see everyone as disposable. This is a failing company who's stock has tanked and they are putting people into homelessness because they keep firing all of the talent and wonder why their numbers are bad. I did not get any severance, and all of my benefits that I was paying into were taken away the same day. They are also fighting my unemployment, because it is Target's default stance to dispute any unemployment claim. This is beyond messed up and is really happening.

They have to make up for the upper management's mess-ups. Target is and will always be a place that celebrates diversity regardless of the current political environment. The CEO messed up. He should have stated that they aren't going to support an initiative after GF because, in general, Target has always hired from the communities it serves, so they wouldn't need initiatives five years after the GF riots. He took a pay cut to save face, BUT no matter where you work, you are a line item on a budget. The bottom line has been affected along with the tariffs, SO people will be let go in the coming months as the end of the physical year (June 31, 2025) is on the horizon. There is another boycott coming in June of 2025 which means MORE LOSS!

They absolutely can, but not for any reason. They cannot discriminate or retaliate. With F/T employees it’s often a legal headache if they do fire them without cause and no severance is offered… hence why there usually severance packages with layoffs.

They can fire anybody at any time for any reason.

I would be surprised if they are firing TMs without severance, especially without cause. They would be hit with multiple lawsuits and it would reach the media within hours.

They’re letting HQ employees go without severance or warning so I can’t imagine stores would get any severance if we aren’t. Not sound rude but that it’s just the stage of the stage right now

Yes it’s happening at stores. This is because payrolls for stores are gutted now. You can either cut staff hours to the bone (keep them employed a few hours a month) or fire them and let them get unemployment. Depending on scenario, store practices differ.

As far as I know non-leadership at stores do not get severance unless state law requires it.

Do store TMs normally get severance? I’ve always been under the assumption that unemployment is the best a store employee can hope for.
