Thread regarding Lumen Technologies layoffs

Layoffs of ICs

How do we keep laying off the people that do the work but yet keep hiring VPs, sr directors. Especially in Enterprise the EVP doesn’t let us backfill people that left and the work just sits there because teams are already short staffed but he keeps hiring and promoting his Canada friends. The people that do the work need to be the ones that get taken care of.

Lumen, the preferred fiber provider for AI all sounds good but Google has a Telco arm and Cogent and the big two have the rest covered at 1/5th the cost. The ole "build it and they will come" does not work anymore. Even Gigabit Transport is a commodity and the need for high availability in the network architecture inherently means multiple carriers into a Cloud architecture. This creates price point transparency and frequent write downs for retention.

That lack of integration is intentional. The CFO knows it is easier to serve the bond dept be keeping the entity and booking and provisioning systems separate. Its easier to audit and spin off the CTL and Qwest business to service the debt when needed. But the risk is the old POTS and LEC business cash flow dwindles.

in the early 2000s, we had good ops people in Seattle and as a result won out of region fiber deals using the Qwest/Frontier routes that were good business at the time. Stock was in the 60s. The CTL merger of Qwest was a bad deal. Should have sold to Level 3 or Verizon to help them with out of region network.

The pandemic didn't help this business model. Level 3 had invested so much in metro fiber and SIP trunk, and then COVID happened, and business offices didn't need VoIP with SIP when workers were at home. And metered revenues on SIP data usage dropped like a rock.

This business is not sustainable. Google will not buy it until the assets are free of the subordinated debt. So, a full bankruptcy is what is ahead. Take it from the 837th MCI employee. It's a rocky road ahead and no integration beyond some ServiceNOW APIs will ever happen.

I looked it up, and was told this aint no rocket science.
Lumen wants to be a fiber company for AI, that's it. So that means all else has to go. Makes perfect sense. If you not touching fiber or making network configurations for it, you are in the OUT bucket.

Seems Operations folks are on this site in droves. Nobody outside of ops has “phones or keys”. I guess the rest of us office ivory tower folks are fine.

RIFs are in their slim down plans. If you can't see it then go buy some glasses. For many employees still there, looking for next job would be wise. It's no longer about talent on the team because slim down has more to do with the deliverables. Hi touch low ROI deliverables have to go. Think "legacy" and "consumer". If it's not fiber then it probably falls into those two categories.

They are going to keep laying off ICs. Constantly changing and increasing targets that you can never hit to make PIPs happen to get you out and if that doesn't work more layoffs. Not sure what the execs think they are doing other than ruining peoples lives.

How many were laid off this round ? Loved the team I was on , and the people I worked with, but I've never seen a company so clueless and chaotic on their processes.... clearly a lot of focus needs to be on training and streamlining processes that continue to set teams/employees up to fail . No finger pointing ,because I think everyone really did want to succeed, and there may be departments that don't understand why operations maybe didn't meet timelines.. often times it was NOT because of lack of want.... ready for a relaxing summer and a new chapter ✌️

People whining about Operations hires. The Sales team welcomes these changes, we are tired of our install teams missing customer due dates on a regular basis. Not as bad as International, so there is that positive.

Right now it’s almost criminal who is being hired into SLT, it’s clear as day friends are being hired of leadership. Most of these leaders couldn’t lead us out of a paper bag. The new VPs like KP have no qualifications, we all laugh at him at his lack of vision.

When the company starts layoff the people who work but hires management. That's a sign of the company getting ready to sell or close up shop!.

That would be contrary to Lumen ideology ……
“ The people that do the work need to be the ones that get taken care of.”

Hah !! You should have known Kye would do that .. its the EVP way to bring in more of your friends to make a quick few bucks, get a nice separation package, and really cause no effect positively to the organization.
