The constant tension and anxiety are unbearable. It’s as if we don’t have enough worries already, without having layoffs looming over our heads for weeks or even months.

Maybe you were already laid off and they forgot to tell you. I heard it happened yesterday in a Calgary SCM reorg call.
Chin up my friend. Please remember what is most important in life....your health and well being. Nothing else comes close in value.
I know its easy to say to stop caring, but....stop caring. You can't control it, but you ARE in full control of what you do next. Paralysis isn't an option, take steps and plan for the future. Maybe you need to re-tool and get into a different line of work, or perhaps just a different industry (healthcare, manufacturing, etc etc).
I am a contractor here and face constant threats, bullying and a CVE leader that takes credit for my (and my team's) work. I can't stand this place, the culture or the tiny mice nuts management has. I push back, I challenge and I say no when the demands interfere in my, or my teams personal lives. The day I am cut loose, I will walk out the door with my head high and my morals intact.
You may or may not be released. But, you will get a package, and you can fall back on EI to limp along till another opportunity comes along. This is the Energy sector, no loyalty and every man for himself/herself. High risk and high reward. No one should ever look at this as a career, just a temporary paycheque.
If it is so upsetting why don't you just leave? Cenovus doesn't own you.
If you're trying to come up with questions that'll get you in trouble, here's one: How exactly are leadership planning to measure productivity improvements from mandating a full return to the office five days a week? Or was that just a top-down decision with no real data behind it? You could also ask what it feels like to have to wait all the way until mid-January to receive one salary payment that's only double what the average employee earns in a year. And maybe follow that up with a question about how that experience compares to the satisfaction of cutting headcount to trim general and administrative expenses.
Next time at a town hall ask many pointed questions. Works like a charm to get a package.
Your feelings are completely valid - this has been an unfair and inhumane way to treat people. I’ve seen people getting sick and worse from the stress of these types of situations. The organization does not deserve to take your health and happiness from you and your family.
As lame as it might sound I would encourage you to use the efap resources. There are career planning resources as well as a straight line through for counseling or stress management. You can at least work to get a plan in place and some sense of control in a situation where you’ve been given very little. Lean on your network and friends and the resources available to you. This will pass.
