Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

is laying off in preference to outsourcing legal/ethical?

for a prospective foreign employee to get approved of h1b, sponsoring employer needs to prove that no other US citizen can do the job, this is to make sure US citizens don’t get displaced. meanwhile US companies are doing mass lay off of american citizens and outsourcing in india, philippines, etc to cut cost.

is that legal or even ethical? is that a loophole on the H1B/US labor law?

what ever happened to “America First” of MAGA?

yes.
and it’s because working remotely is very feasible and easy, applying for a job is also doubly difficult.

before working remotely is a thing, (aside from you job is being transferred to india—because your salary can pay for 5 indian IT) you only compete with fellow locals when applying for a job. now you compete with everyone in the US with the same credentials as you.

it’s a double-edged sword.

sometimes i want to wish that working remotely never became feasible.
because it paved way to outsourcing

IT career (specifically software dev) in the US is slowly dying because of this outsourcing practice by big companies.

add the fact that AI is on the rise.

i will have to advise my would-be college kid/nephew/niece to take up nursing or law instead of computer science

OP, this is a good point.
Is there a way to bring this issue directly to the office of the President? Since one of his initiatives is America First?
Or maybe if each one of us write to our own Congressman, perhaps?

i wonder what ratio is Cigna aiming for.
90% HIH, 10% onshore?

All this savings DOGE is sniffing around for could easily be found by reducing the ridiculous tax breaks given to corporations…..even by a little bit. Nobody’s talking about that though, shameful.

The government is not interested in helping Americans keep their jobs, they have promises to keep to the billionaires corporate club and future campaigns to fund.

HIH solves the legality of this as they're not visa workers, they just work out of the Hyderabad office. Ethically? No, this is sh---y and unethical as he-l

‘Trump's presidency is not about you and never was. He will not save your jobs, he will not stop the off-shoring. He does not care about your needs at all.’

Cigna started moving jobs to India back in 2011. Gee, I wonder who was President then?

Definitely the move cigna has been making for a looooong time. Agents, nurses, claims, etc. More and more going overseas despite the reports that the accuracy & customer satisfaction decreases. What does cigna care if it helps the bottom line?

“he doesnt care about you”

ofcourse he doesn’t. i know that already that’s why i didnt vote for him.

the reason i mentioned “America first” and MAGA is to mock their slogan because they were obviously too myopic and they need to do a better job in their problem solving.

What ever happened to “America First” of MAGA?

Trump doesn't care about or understand the lives of normal people. Everything he's doing is designed to help the rich without any concern for the poor and middle class. He's claiming that the tariffs will allow him to raise enough money to eliminate income taxes. But tariffs will increase the cost of everything for everyone, so if you're already living paycheck to paycheck, you won't be able to afford the things you need, but if you're rich, an increase to the cost of the things you need will barely have an impact. Meanwhile, lower income people get nearly all of what they pay for federal taxes refunded and the amount they don't won't come even close to covering the increase due to the tariffs. He wants to eliminate social security, Medicaid, the government organizations that protect your rights as a worker, the organizations that protect your health and the food you eat. All of these things are more harmful to the poor and middle class while barely impacting the rich.

Trump's presidency is not about you and never was. He will not save your jobs, he will not stop the off-shoring. He does not care about your needs at all.

“is that legal or even ethical?”

Good question! I think company must have consulted with Legal and Ethical teams and officers before they started hiring offshore

@a1+1jrfzzn4m the point is fairly clear. Should outsourcing workers follow the same requirements as H1B, where company needs to prove no US workers can do the work.

Companies get out of paying Social Security and federal unemployment tax by hiring foreign employees in other countries. I would definitely call this a loophole that Congress needs to address ASAP. These companies should be fined at a higher rate than they would pay in SS and FUTA.

Yes. I see it as a way to bypass immigration laws. It is legal but should be outlawed.

i should have added, “is outsourcing a way to go around the H1B law”

with H1B, employers even have to post job listings and prove they can’t find a US citizen who can do the job so that their H1B petition for a prospective employee can be approved.

outsourcing should have a similar rule as H1B because it sure as h*ll it is displacing US citizens en masse

I think what the OP is getting at is H1B labor law should also apply to outsourcing so as not to displace US citizens
