Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Incompetent CIO

What a disaster hire.

MKW, EB, BK, MN… and now RB, his new boss, might shrug this CES off as poor because it’s layoff time, morale is low, and think that’s the reason. A lot of the same comments on this site will probably show up in the CES, too.

They brought in a guy who applies the same method for massively insourcing everything, except he doesn’t have the budget to do it. It is all about reducing application footprint even though he lacks the context that fewer apps doesn’t equal less spend. Some cost more than others. Moving EVERYTHING to low cost geography with zero business context, combined with his 1990s knowledge of data and data warehousing.

Chevron hired a dinosaur of a CIO in an age where dinosaurs like him are extinct. He’s brought in his friends to help, but they are just as incompetent together. The previous crew had little understanding of the customers, but this crew does not care at all about the customers.

Every time LC talks about data in townhalls, I just facepalm that we really hired this guy with even less data understanding than DP from Pennsylvania. If MW wants to win and expects data and digital to be the enablers for winning, he’s taking this company back 10 years.

All of the technology stack that LC talks about are things that Chevron has already modernized a decade ago. What a disaster…

LC has been in hiding. Pretty quiet. Just his comms lady writing all his emails. I can’t believe chevron pays the guy 7 figures a year. To do what?

How is SAP part of IT? Don’t we just pay for software and we don’t have to do anything? IT doesn’t matter.

Yea until SAP goes down and you don’t get paid. Good luck.

@ay, No. Just whining and butthurt. I do have a life, and a career but I have to actually work, it's just not at CVX. I am jealous of those people who can play all day and collect fat paychecks like chevroids, don't get me wrong.

@k2+1jqzfce5a OP here, and already have a job in the new organization but it doesn’t mean that I have to agree with what LC is doing to IT.

Yes, but they should look at the state that those companies are in, particularly in IT.

It isn’t cheaper. It’s more expensive and it’s even less effective.

Their way is to INSOURCE everything and hire engineers as employees to manage everything. Dump all MSPs for things that are commodity and we shouldn’t manage, and built it all ourselves… but do it in India

Thanks for the background on Randy Mott, now it makes sense to me. They have a history of gutting IT departments and they will use the same process to revamp Chevron IT.
The goal is to slash costs and reduce the level of service to the customers. The ELT knew they could not accomplish this with the current management team, so they are bringing in a new management team with no alliance to the previous management staff. It makes sense....

@k2+1jqzfce5a The function can blame itself for being so incompetent under BB’s leadership. The disaster that is digital core and triple crown should have never happened and would have never happened in any other company.

The problem is when you bring in a guy who comes with a crew… but don’t know anything about what the customers need, it’ll only exasperate the problem even more.

@k2+1jqzfce5a there’s not a single person I have met who has good things to say about LC. Anybody who has had any interaction with him cannot honestly say that EB made a good hire, or even mediocre hire.

Imagine if we went out and hired a reservoir engineer but didn’t involve anybody who knew anything about reservoir engineering and just went with a search firm’s recommendation on what’s on paper. Imagine if we were hiring a senior leader for finance but didn’t involve finance people at all. Oh wait.. ahhhhhhh… that is what happened. It all makes sense now.

Like d-mb and d-mber

I guess with what’s going on in the world today, this is OK. Just turn the other way?

Randy Mott, former CIO of Dell, then HP, then General Motors… is the guy who brought LC along in every one of his jobs. Randy is now working for EY in their center for executive leadership. Yah, tell me there’s nothing wrong with this picture.

If MN and EB wanted the outstanding (not!) IT departments that is the data privacy leaks and low quality offshoring of GM, HP, Dell, maybe they should have paid Randy Mott directly, instead of giving LC and all of his friends all that money to do exactly what Randy Mott would have done anyway. It is obvious that he cannot think for himself and needs his daddy to guide him through step by step what to do.

I'm thinking the OP is in line to be cut and they need someone to blame/rant about, but it's only himself who is responsible. It's blatantly obvious.

It’s an interesting phenomenon.
The guy knows very little about IT. But is so confident when he talks through his playbook that he’s used for years. Almost sounds pompous or egotistical in his delivery, but the cr-p that comes out his mouth makes no sense. One might say that MN does the same, but this one feels different.

If all your PSG 25-27s are happy seeing all the boxes are available out there… keep in mind that LC brought in all those contractors under his bf, and they are waiting to pounce after some of these boxes are left unfilled in a couple weeks.

The only people truly safe are the closed positions. And the whole FLT should be scrutinized who they decided to close in jobs. New scope, new roles, new PSGs, yet some were closed anyway. How they decided it had no rhyme or reason other than they like their friends and not you.

@e4+1jqzfce5a LC was actually hired by EB.

MN was not the decision maker for this one. EB was the CTC president who went out and found this weasel

What happens if they aren't able to fill the jobs in ENGINE before July 1? Some of the IT jobs are very specific and not sure they will be filled within this time frame. If you're left standing and don't transition to your replacemnet, I guess they (ITLT) don't care what happens. I'm pryaing ENGINE fails and we have a major IT incidnet. Good luck executing a BCP event from these lost cost regions.

"rinse and repeat", "rinse an repeat".... he was hired by former Downstream big boss, MN - I guess he liked his story at GM in Austin

he was hired to do a job by MN. MN could have picked someone else within IT --- MN wanted this

What they are doing is literally TREASON.

This is illegal, and Americans should all be insisting that the people responsible for this be held accountable for this illegal activity!

"treason /trē′zən/
noun

The betrayal of allegiance toward one's own country, especially by committing hostile acts against it or aiding its enemies in committing such acts.

The betrayal of someone's trust or confidence.

The offense of attempting to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance, or of betraying the state into the hands of a foreign power; disloyalty; treachery.

Similar: disloyalty treachery

I think the ELT is using him to implement the IT transition to the Engine and then IT will be gradually handed over to a team of Indian managers and executives. After the management transition, LC will be $h!t canned with the other IT staff. LC is disposable and the ELT are using him like a brown paper bag.

Ay all they gots to do is ask “is Exxon doing it this way?” The answer is no. Except Nelson and Bonner are not smart enough to ask those questions as they think IT is just Teams and Excel.

The high level org charts are out, but he hasn’t explained the operating model change. Make fun of him for all the rocking back and forth during townhalls all you want, or that he’s a completely dummass about data management… but the thing that he’s doing that will completely destroy things is that he’s shifting everything to IT Ops, aka let his buddy KG run things to support his director PSG that we’ve not seen before.

Instead of having a surface app or subsurface app or a trading solution handled by the platform product line’s MSP or employees on that business product line with domain knowledge of that area, the new model is that after you’re done building the app, or configuring the SaaS for your product line, it ALL moves to KG with IT OPs.

And he hates MSPs and wants to insource it all by moving it to ENGINE and having employees with no business knowledge sitting in IT OPs support that trading system, subsurface application, or facilities thing. It is absolutely coo coo.

Instead of having a CSCM or SPM platform team available to support an “app”, it’s going to be someone in IT Operations with no enhancements, no tweaks, just run and maintain.

Yup, thats the model. And for all the 1diots on here wondering what da F IT does and what’s the big deal……. You’ll find out soon when all your sh1t breaks and there’s no one to fix it because 1) they don’t know how, and technically, 2) it’s not their problem in the new model. Because their f-king script says it’s not broken. You just changed your process and data, and it doesn’t work for you anymore.

We’re in uncharted waters. Say what you will about promoting from within and recycling people within the leadership ranks, but at least there was a limit to how much a “lifer” could potentially f things up. With this guy, the possibilities are infinite.

MKW and MN must see this total rejection by the function.

When SCM went outside and hired ML, it was relatively short lived but it was not anything like this. When D&C went outside and got KM to eventually be VP of wells, it was not like this. When Cyber went outside and hired CL to be CISO, it was definitely not like this. Like holy sh!t this is bad,

The only thing I know is that when he visited GOM, my manager said they met, and he was pretty disengaged. He was supposed to be learning about our BU, but it was described as “a huge waste of my f&ckin time with a d1-kwad”

It’s unbelievable that this lightweight Les somehow landed the CIO job at Chevron. There’s been absolutely nothing impressive about him in any of the half dozen or so meetings I’ve been in with him. He asks questions to give the illusion of understanding or caring but they’re just superficial queries. He’s terrible. No wonder he never shows his face. Same goes for his buddy KG.
