Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Question

I’m convinced my department has a secret policy of promoting the most incompetent people imaginable. One senior manager is the absolute worst—no skills, no experience, no clue how anything actually works. Just spews corporate buzzwords like "synergy" and "game-changer" while making everything ten times harder.

He pretends to care about the team, but it’s all fake. The only thing he cares about is himself. First thing he did? Promoted the office bully to a made-up role. Then he started “optimizing processes,” which just means adding useless meetings and removing anything that actually worked. He keeps talking about “revolutionizing” the company while actively running it into the ground.

And when things go wrong? “Great feedback! Let’s circle back on that.” Spoiler: We never do.

This guy has no qualifications, no education, and zero accountability. How do these people keep failing upward? Do technical department have these people too or is it just the support functions?

Performance, PMP, does not matter. It’s only who you know. The good ole boy culture is strong in Chevron. If MW calls a new leader and says “I have had this advisor for 8yrs, it’s time they be rewarded with a GM role I think they could handle”, do you think there is and recently promoted leader that would tell MW no? Nope they take the person, and if they don’t perform they get encouraged to find a new role with higher PSG and get pushed off to a new manager. How many teams are made up of Miss mashed people who have no actual talent for the job, but are just shuffled around?

Confirmed. It is a secret policy that only exists in your department.

I think you are talking about the same person that stated "We are too focused on safety" in their first week in the role. Convientltly they have selective memory and will be doing a stand down now preaching the importance.

I spent years in school, did internships, completed the Horizons program, and have 15 years of real engineering experience—yet some guy in a "non technical" function with a fake CV and zero skills makes more than me and has the audacity to call themselves and engineer after completing a 2 week course 25 years ago.

You are not alone.
PMP is made to be cheated.
