Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Stay away

If you're doing your due diligence and checking this site to decide whether to accept a job at Elevance, consider this your warning: don't. Just walk away. Your life will be better if you move on before giving this place a chance to ruin your career and your sanity. That's it. That's all I wanted to say.

Is there any lawsuit out there for employees who were let go because they were older? Fired?

It wasn't just forcing admins in; the direct team she inherited, many of whom were working remotely (at least in other cities/states), she told them to relocate to Indy on their dime or be fired. She also mandated six days a week for them in office, and to be prepared to come in Sundays as well.

As you said, Covid knocked her off course, but she's doing her best to bring all that back before she skates off into retirement leaving smoking ruins behind her.

Yes just let coworkers go that I worked with for a decade and didn’t even allow us to say goodbye. Gail is a horrible person.

So much offshoring to the Philippines. What a shame this company has gone down hill. Since legato aka carelon global solutions has come in

So many PowerPoint presentations I see are busy messes. I've taken to avoiding reading them, and just listening to what the presenter has to say. I don't want to read numerous 6-point font run-on sentences or try-hard diagrams during a long presentation.

The PowerPoint comments made me laugh out loud in a sad way, because it couldn't be more true. The amount of time I spend dressing up slides is sickening. I could succinctly write up 3 sentences about how I just cured cancer, but it wouldn't mean sh-t unless it was on a fancy slide. Leadership doesn't understand anything unless there's a big blue arrow with a "thumbs up" icon beside it. I've had some terrific ideas and have done a lot of good work here, but my biggest praise that I can remember came from a graph I designed to represent some mediocre financial accomplishment.

I joined in 2005 and was recently laid off. I'm sad about it because while I am at an age where getting a new job will be hard but I am too young to retire. I am not sad about joining the company back in 2005 because back then it was a great place to work. What I am so regretting is how hard I worked and how loyal I was, especially because of how they got rid of me - no warning, no chance for goodbyes, anything. I was locked out of my computer and that was it after 20 years of loyalty and hard work. I was at the top of the pay range for my grade which made me a target. I told my family for months I was at risk for a RIF and they didn't believe me - they said but you get along and get good bonuses and are good at your job. They didn't understand that the HR and Finance people don't care about any of that. This is not a company that deserves anyone's loyalty.

The fu--ing PowerPoints. UGH. The amount of PowerPoints we have to create... half the content isn't even fully vetted or rooted in reality but it just needs to tell a "good story." Ba-f.

20 years, >50 years old. Recent RIF.

When I joined Anthem I was so proud to work for them, I enjoyed my coworkers, loved my job, and serving our members. 4 CEOs later the company doesn't resemble anything like the one I joined. The Wellpoint merger was a major shift, but we integrated and worked at becoming a whole team. The steep decline happened with Gail coming on board, one of her first major decisions was that Admins could not be OPW anymore. She demanded they come back into the office immediately or be fired. That shocked me, and it was as a foreshadowing of the 'hybrid' model she demanded. Covid knocked her off course, and you'd think with Covid and more people being hired remotely that she might change her mind.... but no she doubled down on this outdated concept that you have to report into an office, even if you don't work with anyone there.
Taking AIM and Ingenio forcing them into Carelon, and increasing offshore operations, and loosing CALPERS pretty much put the death nail into this company. In the >20 years, I've never seen rolling Rif's the likes that have been happening. The anxiety, and dread of my co-workers increased every Thursday of a non payday week.... then when the Rif's started on Fridays and Mondays, people were just in constant anxiety.
I really do regret putting my career first over family the many times that I did. There was always a fire-drill that I needed to work on. The times I did have a day off and I got a call that something was needed urgently and I logged back in, I regret that most. Had I known that I'd be tossed aside like trash one Friday afternoon, I would have moved on 10 years ago when another Health Plan tried to hire me..., but I stayed because our CEO was a decent human and I believed in our mission statement.... what a fool I was.

None of what the OP says is hyperbolic. It is poisonous. It will leave you drained. When I started at this company years ago, it was not like this. The common denominator for the demise of this company is Gail. She’s sinking the ship we’re all on.

I have to agree on the toxic environment here and how it is very draining working at Elevance now. Also agree that it wasn’t like this before, or in the beginning of my employment. But how many of those postings for “onshore” staff are real? Is there really any new “onshore “ staff coming new to the company?? I would guess that the “new” staff is offshore, and think this place is great to work for like the Taj Mahal.

I feel the exact same way as the OP. I should have left after the first six month upon discovering the horribly toxic work environment. Due to my age, I am stuck riding this train to retirement or rif.

If you are in a leadership position, the most important skill you can have is powerpoint. I am not even remotely joking. Executive leadership loves a good powerpoint. If your team is improving and doing well, but your powerpoint skills are not expert, you will be seen as a poor leader. If your team’s numbers are horrible but you are great at powerpoint and can put together some BS path to green, there will always be a place for you here.

All comes down to your powerpoint skills.

I’ve been out for quite a while. It WAS a great place to work. So sad. From what I’ve heard from ex-colleagues over the past 6months to a year, it’s not at all what it used to be. Hearing the same from friends that have coverage with them.

People are leaving left and right, earlier retirement than they planned, to get out of this toxic place. You can work yourself to the bone and never get ahead, get the salary you deserve or the respect and be told how "you are lucky to have a job" Talent leaves because it can
