Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

What on earth has happened to Cigna?

What on earth has happened to Cigna?
We’re supposed to be a company that provides health coverage to the American people, yet over the past two years, we've seen continuous staff reductions. And now, more layoffs?

It feels like there's no end in sight. You’re steadily bleeding talent and offshoring jobs at every opportunity — all in the name of boosting stock prices and delivering shareholder value. But let me remind you: we are shareholders too — we are Americans too.

Cigna’s core values once stood for care, integrity, and commitment. Now, it feels like those values have been abandoned in favor of profits. If this continues, people will speak out. We will share our experiences. And the message will be clear: Cigna has lost its way.

Cigna lost its way about 6-8 yrs ago when it started buying up other companies. I quit last April 1st, after almost 11 yrs.

No, Cigna is not a wholly owned entity of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). Cigna operates independently as a publicly traded company with its own shareholders and leadership. BCBSA, on the other hand, is a federation of 33 independent health insurance companies that operate under the Blue Cross and Blue Shield brands.

These two organizations are separate entities.

“CIGNA is a wholly owned entity of the BCBSA”

This is NOT true!

Every person who finds out i work at Cigna takes the opportunity to rant about how expensive Cigna is and how high the allowables and deductible are compared to paying out of pocket. And that's if Cigna approves the auth or allows the service at all. And they're absolutely correct! I wouldn't be surprised if there's a mass move to uninsured Americans who shop around and haggle for healthcare services. Insurance companies overregulate, overcharge, and underdeliver, and Cigna clearly prioritizes exec compensation over patients or employees.

Indeed, and as such YOU also profit with the steady upward trend of the stock price - if you have been wise enough to do a 401k match with Cigna stock.

It's a shell of its former self, that's for sure. I'm in Home Based Care and I am actually now getting my head to the point where I want out. It's a cr-ppy work environment anymore. I think I will thrive somewhere else.

Drive to 2025 became "Survive in 2025" for the worker bees.
The ELT have enriched themselves in the meantime.

Cigna is the poster child for how NOT to operate a health services company. "Profits over people" is absolutely true!

And it's clear that DC is setting the stage for his big exit, probably in a year's time. After he makes sure he milks as much from this cash cow as possible and gets a PLATINUM parachute as his parting gift.

It's a shame. Medco used to be a really good place to work. We had much better leadership. Folks who did more than just build up their personal wealth. Things sure do change!

Good luck to all directly affected in these hush hush layoffs.

I sincerely hope word gets out to the media and industry and that Cigna gets the bad press they deserve. DC will simply make the rounds and spin it all, giving his spiel about how he cares so much for patients. We know better.

CIGNA is a wholly owned entity of the BCBSA, whose individual BCBS and Anthem entities are paying out $2.67 Billion in the subscriber/employer class action lawsuit that finalized last year.

And, the parallel BCBS provider class action is still ongoing, with another $2.xx Billion on the line.

Stop complaining about the CIGNA layoffs. These class actions were warranted. I know, as I am an Anthem subscriber/employer as well as owner of a health care provider that works in 38 states.

The BCBS entities need a good a** whooping.

These things can coexist. Cigna’s leadership clearly thought there was a lot of fat to trim, and that it could be trimmed without affecting the services we provide. (Obviously not talking about the at home primary care department being totally termed)

Honestly, they never reduced with the ESI merger and they over-hired during covid. This is the pendulum swinging back. Sure corporate greed plays into it but it is what it is. Hopefully those laid off get a good severance and can roll into another job quickly.

What has happened? Corporate greed.
Profits over people. That should be their new mission statement.
