They just laid off 365 people Wed at the TI in Dallas Tx

Just a quick clarification on the WARN Act for anyone following this thread: Providing severance pay does not replace the legal requirement to give 60 days’ notice under the federal WARN Act. If the layoff meets the threshold (generally 50+ employees at a single site), employers are still required to provide advance notice, regardless of whether severance is offered.
Severance might be used to offset liability after the fact, but it doesn’t legally fulfill the notice requirement unless the employer pays employees their full wages and benefits for the 60-day period in lieu of notice, and even then, they may still be liable unless proper notice protocols were followed.

Hope this helps clear up the confusion.
Micron and Intel provided Lehi with the tools, software, and personnel to be successful.
Texas Instruments did not.
IM Flash encouraged out-of-the-box thinking and innovation.
Texas Instruments did not.
Texas Instruments failed to lead.
IM Flash had a world-class fab. It frequently accomplished the impossible.
Texas Instruments tore that down.
IM Flash had a reputation for being able to ramp up to new products quickly, above schedule and efficiently.
Texas Instruments chose to push out top fab experts and skilled leaders.
Many worked 'off the clock' and extremely long hours to compensate for TI's insistence on keeping the site understaffed and without adequate tools/software. Texas Instruments decided to fire those employees. Layoffs were not based on personal reviews or supervisor input. It was simply about taking back those salaries.
Texas Instruments chased after short-term cash. It failed to provide a clear direction. It failed to lead. It treated employees like cr-p. What did Texas Instruments think would happen?

Look for an email from Thursday from dse_NA3@docusign.net titled Reduction in Force: Important Information and Documents. It doesn't say anything about TI to clue you in.
I haven’t received any emails from TI regarding final pay, medical coverage, etc. Is there a number I can call or email address of the HR department ?
To the person that posted this...
** The day of reckoning has finally come. The arrogance and Attitude that the entire FAB has been stuck in is a contributing factor as to why this happened. Site leadership has made it clear they've wanted Lehi to be aligned with the rest of TI with much resistance from the Micron/IM Flash veterans. This is a total culture reset to rid the facility of the Micron/IM Flash era. **
First of all, shame on you! This arrogance and attitude is why TI leadership is the absolute worst LFAB has ever seen. This is exactly the attitude that we have had to suffer through, and the way TI leadership treats its employees. We have been handcuffed by incredibly poor leadership decisions since the buyout, all the while, blaming it on the workforce. You had 2 years to develop program for LFAB, but waited until the last moment to go AMHS. Then rolled it out without anything working. If we having subpar programs, you get subpar performance. That's all on you as a company.
TI has been laying off people for the past year in small batches. I loved the Lehi team great group of people. The word here in Dallas is that they were bloated and couldn't get work the program. (Perception of Dallas HQ)
Should have been no surprise though after the come to Jesus cost blitz last year. I'm also guessing that site mgmt didn't listen to what all the Indian VPs were saying.
I suspect more rifs here in Dallas soon... This time the BUs + more support groups.
@mr Amazingly well-written.

Kicking myself for having put in so many late nights and weekend hours for Texas Instruments in Lehi. The upper management at Texas Instruments is the worst I have experienced in my semiconductor career working for three different companies. Because Lehi did not lay off anyone in atd, my guess is they will supplement the 50% of process engineering team they laid off with ATD engineers. This is really a low class move by upper management. Best wishes to all my work buddies who got the shaft. TI has shown that you are disposable, so you would be well advised to do the minimum amount of work necessary to keep from getting fired.
TI management is the absolute worst. They took a highly performing and motivated site and drove sentiment and satisfaction and performance into the ground. They have no planning skills. They have no manufacturing skills. This is why 20 years ago it was all the rage to go foundry - they literally could not manufacture the parts they designed. Today no different. They blame the Lehi team for not being able to make the stuff they don't understand themselves - reams of ATD oversight and they couldn't steer to pass the reliability quals? You know, not the fault of the people who haven't been making your parts for the last 20 years.
Management gives everyone 20 number one priorities and then they flip every meeting. They literally step over a dollar to pick up a dime on a daily basis. They idle tools and then cry when lots get stuck behind down equipment. Save money? No. They just give every department a disparate goal which makes managers behave in a self conserving, self interested way. They give PE transfer and they behave like that's the number one priority, literally ignoring yield goals while making the transfer numbers. They give EE cost goals so they conserve on parts and contracts while machines stay down limiting WIP and wafers out. They give PI yield goals so that no brainer cost projects cannot be implemented because they have no interest. Literally a SH*T show. Meanwhile they got rid of the best managers the site ever had in favor of pompous self promoting Dallas people who can't see the value of everything directly in front of them. They dissolve motivation like sugar in hot water.
Let me give you a tip: you can actually make common goals like "number of good die out of the factory". This can apply to all groups so you don't have managers acting in self interest. But maybe you would know this if you ever actually took a business class. I know, I know, employees are supposed to be a commodity that you use and throw away, sort of like disposable batteries. Some companies however find that actually creating employee satisfaction has a better bottom line...you'll never know.
The "flexibility" part of the layoff was a direct reference to the idea that those downsized could easily apply for the Texas jobs. Funny, despite recruiting heavily Utah folks weren't interested in applying. TI management had the answer - downsize! Now you are motivated to move. Funny how desperation can make one "flexible".
Management (JP and BD) stood in front of everyone and told them the firings were to position the company well for the expansion. Huh? That's the d-mbest lie I ever heard a lying manager say to convince employees the sky is brown. Ever hear of transparency? Why not just say you wanted to move people to Sherman? You are literally in an expansion of LFAB 1 and LFAB 2 around the corner. But you need to "right size" for the expansion? That's just two face speak for we found another way to step over a dollar to pick up a dime.
Like others have said, those chosen for layoff leave everyone shaking their heads. Ok, bottom 20%, go for it. Departments not pulling their weight, ok. But you let go essential people, high performing people and whole areas that adding a ton of value? Bottom managers had no idea so you don't even have the trust to let them manage their area and choose the canon fodder.
They said they can work smarter, use Dallas tools. Then you referred to data science projects originated in LFAB. Seriously? Are you really that bad? You have no clue.
No one says "I love to work for TI" or "TI is my dream job". It pays the bills but everyone is looking for something better. TI just trusts in the fact that finding something comparable is out of reach for most people without a pay cut and a relocation. Yep, you got 'em by the *alls. Good for you TI, but this will eventually pay out like most things. You reap what you sow.
TI: Training Institute. Totally Incompetent. Texas Illusionists. Terrible Intuition. Took Incentives. Test Insane.
"How will this lay off impact 3rd parties working at the site?" They stopped giving some of us work weeks ago, contract be damnd. Teams have been looking for other work outside of TI and are leaving for better options. Our years of experience will never be offered to TI again. I've heard some were kept on and I wish them the best of luck but don't stay if it gets worse. TI doesn't care about it's own people let alone 3rd party people.
On multiple occasions, Dallas workers who visited asked why they couldn't use Lehi's modern methods (software, etc.). All I could do was shrug my shoulders. Dallas made those decisions. Dallas is stuck on legacy software. Their system is awkward and often difficult to access from Lehi. I suspect part of the problem might have been with the 2023 change in Texas Instruments top leadership in Dallas.
Replying to the "we were all high and mighty post" . Its called mutual respect. We have had 80k plus monthly outs on this site. Next time to TI, try thinking through things. You su-k at manufacturing. There are people on this site who have good ideas too. Your "good Ideas" are just, you need to stop doing somethings and start doing others but you have no examples.
All of our people that went to Dallas saw the insanity and how much you su-k. You don't know what you are doing. Its all about one number, the headcount and then you come to the site and you don't ask anyone what is wrong. Well, lets start with giving us no access to probe to get data to bring up the part types. Your only answer, "use param" but you never have any specifics and you have been here for months, so why didn't you fix it? We yield better than DM6. Why is that?
Try asking Dallas for anything. They can't even measure some damn wafers for us. Their system software su-ks and then we get a new MES that is far inferior to what we had with Micron. You take over the site with your managers and you never truly analyze anything. You never look at trade offs or downsides. Its all about this week's cost numbers. What about next months numbers?
Your manufacturing culture is toxic. You rule by fear and intimidation. You don't listen.
The test wafer team was saving the company millions and you won't even copy that because that's not the way TI does it.
But you get in front of everyone and act like you saved the world by getting rid of "The Safety Good Catch" requirement. How many times have you used that as an example? You too, are a waste of money if that is the summation of your analysis of how bad the site is and your contribution to the bottom line.
Lehi fab came into the TI network high and mighty. So many of the team was full of arrogance and felt they would guide the way for TI into modern manufacturing.
The problem is, we never came close to delivering. We hemorrhaged good talent, talked big, and continually failed to meet goals.
I guess our day has come. The experiment in change failed, so time to go full TI on this site. Unleashing the power of mediocrity and a skeleton crew so underwater that all they can do is barely maintain.
This has been part of the plan since acquisition! TI knew they'd gut LFAB!
It was way too bloated. Too many experienced and highly paid engineers! We knew their hiring strategy was 80% new college grad (cheap, high churn labor). I was laid off in Sep. Why didn't they lay me off now? Because I had a large Micron RSU portfolio that vested DAYS after my severance expired!
I guarantee you RSUs (payment avoidance) is part of their timing strategy!
We now know why INTEGRITY was a strong held value at IMFlash and never entered the values vocabulary of Texas Instruments!
Ping me on LinkedIn if you got duped out of RSUs.
This isn’t a one-time layoff. Layoffs started in September 2024 with the gutting of Training & Documentation groups.
This just happens to be the largest and the only one getting noticed by outsiders.
Salt Lake Tribune says if you been impacted and want to be interviewed contact
This is a developing story and will be updated. If you have been affected by the Texas Instruments layoffs and are willing to speak with a reporter, please email Megan Banta at mbanta@sltrib.com.
Is this a company wide lay off? What are the reasons the management is giving? Does it have anything to do with TI losing market share or the competition getting stronger or demand weaker
With the 60 days pay + years of service the severance is better than it would have been if you were with Micron. What did the age distribution for the impacted people look like?
I'm a veteran of the semiconductor manufacturing industry working in diffusion and rapid thermal annealing who got laid of way back in 1998.
Some of the older guys I worked with at the time in 90's told me about previous layoffs in 1973, 1979, 1981 and this year and that year.
I decided to get out of semiconductor manufacturing all together at that point.
My heart goes out to all you guys especially the ones with mortgages, car payments and mouths to feed.
The semiconductor is brutal, just look at all the layoffs at Intel.
I'm wondering if any industry is safe anymore or we're all going to be replaced with robots and AI.
I'm not an expert, but I think the 60 days required for the WARN act is only 60 days before at least 50 people begin going unpaid.
If they give everyone at least 60 days of severance, then they can file the WARN notice today.
I know there are lots of 3rd parties that also work at the Lehi site. How will this lay off impact 3rd parties working at the site?
Had they offered a voluntary separation with a similar package I would guess over 50% would have ran for the exits
Where is the info about RSU's
They said the selection was “following a TI policy based on experience, flexibility, and skills” It appears flexibility related to age for about half the cuts.
Someone asked “how is it possible that an accurate assessment was made based on the criteria of flexibility and skills if lower level management was not involved in the decision”.... to which “The decision was not made lightly and not made by a single person. There was a group of people. And we have performance assessments we have twice a year”.
If you look at the document titled Exhibit_A from the separation paperwork, it has a breakdown of the count of who was let go and who was retained. Looks like 206 were laid off vs 333 retained (in the "decisional unit", whatever that means). So about a 38% RIF.
According to the separation paperwork, there were 206 people laid off yesterday. No clue on how they were selected, and even more perplexing when I look at some of the absolutely worthless leaders and coworkers who ended up staying. High performing engineers and technicians just got sent on their way.
When the Micron fab closed years ago, some employees were let go just so that TI can be willing to acquire the fab. This place is cursed.
If a town hall meeting is scheduled for my shift is that when I find out if I am impacted? What is the meeting scheduled as?
I was an OG at LFAB :). I was also let go. I just want to say to those that were also let go, thank you for everything you did to try to make your teams successful. I didn’t hear a “good luck”or “thank you for what have done for the company” from any execs. So, ya, for what it’s worth I appreciate you all.
Yeah, seems unfortunate but true about bypassing the WARN with 60 days pay plus extra for years of service
Companies bypass WARN notice by giving minimum 60 day compensation. Which they did as severance package plus 1 week of salary per year of service.
Why was this not on WARN?
In Utah, the WARN Act obligations are triggered by events such as mass layoffs, plant closures, or significant reductions in the workforce. These circumstances require employers to provide a 60-day notice to employees and relevant agencies.
Mass Layoffs: Triggered when 50 or more employees are laid off within a 30-day period.
Plant Closures: Occur when a facility shuts down, affecting 50 or more employees.
Significant Workforce Reductions: Involves a reduction of at least 33% of the workforce, impacting 50 or more employees.
TI leadership for the last few years.. "Believe in the Unbelievable and Imagine the Possibilities". "Have Faith and Be Positive".
Well known as BU&IP and HF&BP.
I doubt they got those phrases from Wharton. Are they even Engineers?
Been at this site for 25 years. Today was literally the worst day ever. Watched too many of my close friends and colleagues shed tears as they walked out the door never to return. Wish I was one of them. Never, ever, never, work for Texas Instruments! They don’t give a f&$k about you or anyone else.
As an American and Utahn I have the right to understand how many H1B's where let go today. Does anybody know any hard numbers? I heard not many.
Something gives me the feeling not many at all. The H1Bs should be used only when they cannot find locals skilled enough to do a particular job....not to supplement the labor force at large (what they are really used for). It is hard to imagine most jobs here meet this requirement legitimately. They give this PoS company more flexibility to hire and fire as they see fit without fear of labor shortages.
If none were we should be on the phone to Mike Lee and John Curtis right now, demanding the Chips Act grants are rescinded. This is absolutely insane if true and somebody needs to do something.
Got laid off. My manager told me i was the top performer in my group for last 3 years. Was up for promotion and Tech Ladder this year. I even let go couple of job offers from Micron. Feel like a b-m. Only breadwinner in the house. TI su-ks.
