MBA Degree

Like it or hate this post IDGAF

I graduated from an Ivy League MBA.

I picked Chevron and had a lot of options. Now I wish I never did. I feel like my MBA was a waste. Harry here makes the same as me and he did a fraction of what I did in life.

Why did this company ruin my MBA; why does Wirth command millions when we suffer? Why is morale dead. I wouldn’t wish employment here on my worst enemy.

Not all Ivy League MBAs are created equal, friend. Sounds like you didn’t go somewhere relevant like Harvard or Wharton. Since you made the decision to come to Chevron, guessing you went to some middling school for a pipeline to corporate mediocrity. Oil companies are dominated by engineers, period. If your school didn’t advise you of that before you made the decision to hire on, that’s just unfortunate.

I got my degree from UT back when it was 100% a diploma mill. Today it is considered one of the premiere public universities in the nation so I love using a bit of "stolen valor" to get ahead.

I get the feeling the OP at best might be able to follow a recipe with some marginal success. My son dropped out of college before completing his first semester last fall. He’s closing in on his first million just by putting characters in meaningful order. Go figure some things are just what you make of them.

@a2+1 assume you are referring to JSW who did undergraduate at UC Davis which is a top ten public university and an MBA at University of Chicago which is one of the top rated business schools (U.S News rank #1 in 2023). How does your CV stack up - do feel free to share.

Ivy League = Rotting Ivy

They are only special in that they are connected to money and power.
With a lot of money, you can buy a few smart people.
But their integrity is in the toilet since you can't buy that.

'Or the previous one went to UC Davis for godsakes'

Don't be too ignorant.
UC Davis is a highly ranked public institution, at least before it went woke.
It is ranked behind UCBerkeley and UCLA in California.

Oh Jeez, another whining MBA because they have been selected to be part of the ELT. I knew some colleagues that quit their job to pursue a Harvard MBA. I did not think they were anything exceptional. An MBA helps you to understand the money flow and finance, but does nothing to help you learn the core business.

Take a cursory look at the T-mobile layoff page and see the woes. This company has the dean Harvard business school as a board member. A prime example that each a top dog From an ivy cannot foresee future business performance and enact good governance. If your cell signal is cr-p, an MBA ain't gonna fix it. so, its a sure bet to prioritize how to drill and produce oil.

Chevron did not ruin your MBA. I have an MBA and it has helped me perform my job role better over the years. As someone else said, "an MBA gets you in the door...". If you are laid off your MBA will help you get in another door. Negativity is a destructive trait, try to forget about what Chevron "owes you", and evaluate what you have to offer the next company. I have been here 15 years and Chevron did not meet my career expectations but I am not bitter. I have enjoyed working at Chevron and I have learned many things that I can apply at my next employer. If I am laid off, I will dust myself off and get back in the next game. God Speed everyone!

Lots of negative comments. Forget hard work and being competent. Go network and lie your way to the top. I know lots of incompetent ppl at Chevron especially graduates from Colorado school mines and Texas universities. Go kick A** and leave your brain at home to deal with the incompetence.

How do you know if someone went to an Ivy League MBA program? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you.

If you got an MBA from an ivy league school and didn't go into consulting, a hedge fund,or investment banking, you messed up. All these people who went to UT or LSU think nothing of your degree or pedigree. Many even look down on it.

But there are whole industries where that degree means a lot. Your odds of making the C suite are tremendously higher doing 10 years of consulting and then spinning out into an industry. Starting in the industry means you start at the bottom with ill defined progression path. Starting in consulting or I-banking gives you a clear path to at least junior partner / MD.

If you're not that far out of school, eat the crow and make the pivot.

I'm ivy league undergrad in a technical roll and happy. I work reasonable hours on stuff I like doing and it pil industry pays better than academia. But most of my college friends have climbed higher and faster than me in business rolls with the above strategy.

Ivy league MBAs are mainly catered for overseas students from no name universities to gain legitimacy in America. Due to historical context us Americans are tricked by the ivy league. MBAs are the cause of the problem and not the solution. Back in the day it was a degree to cater WELL seasoned engineers with business acumen, now a liberal arts major with 2 years experience can get an ivy MBA. Perhaps you should join a consultancy so you can advise/swindle the Business performance team and gain MW attention.

What is "from an Ivy League MBA"? No one refers to their degree or even the program as a "insert name of school MBA" as if it was a place. That's what you learned in college? A reputable college-prep high school worth it's salt would have suited you better.
Did you get your MBA recently? It has been a known and verifiable fact among the science and tech communities that MBAs are close to useless for advancing in any technical field. If you get one after you have some experience it carries a little more weight because that illustrates that you have a little idea of what you want to pursue, which is management. And none of the best managers that I've worked for had MBAs but some of them have masters degrees in their (ENG) field, which is a more difficult degree to obtain. And those folks who said "just opens the door" are correct. Very little that you do is related, but the fact that you can tackle a similar subject is proven with the degree. And many are handed out like candy. Didn't the professors explain that? The "back in the day" ones did.

Can we stop acting like expensive schools give people an edge? I'd rather take someone with a community college degree because they actually had to work for the things they had because they were most likely underprivileged to begin with.

The degree gets you in the door, that’s all. Every job move within the company has zero to do with your degree. Use those contacts you made at your Ivy League school to get in somewhere else that values your education.

If you graduated from an Ivy League school, one would assume that you have the mental capacity and the critical thinking skills to a realize that a CORPORATION like CVX is doing exactly what your MBA program would have taught you: minimize costs to maximize profits in order to drive share price up and pay attractive dividend yield to shareholders. That is it -- that's the entire purpose of any public "for profit" corporation. The purpose is NOT to employ as much human capital as possible or to keep a whiny b*tch like you happy with career choices you've made.....

And all these IT tyrds from Chico. Thankfully a lot of them are San Ramon. Get the losers out of here. We want to be #1
