It is general incompetence all around that has caused this. Rot started during PSO’s time when tech talent was sidelined in favor of managerial talent. That’s when managers with no tech ability to speak of started to manage engineers (Courtesy Bain & Co.) This spread to even board with AB becoming Chairman. For a high tech company like Intel, giving secondary importance to Engineering is toxic. Over time even many PE roles have been occupied by people who market themselves well irrespective of their technical talent. HR, jumped on the bandwagon and forgotten how to effectively hire, train and retain tech talent.

The word ‘Leadership’ has lost meaning. Instead the word ‘management’ is used synonymously with leadership.

Wokeness has done some damage. But it is nothing compared to mis-management.

Intel is losing not because of wholeness but because of incompetent re--rds that cannot think with proper logic ( like the OP and supporters)

For many many years other races were denied to opportunity and white supremacy was rampant in corporations, what about that cost of losing on the best talent ? Best talent, excellent skills don’t always lie in white race only but the white race only got opportunities.

There was a study where resumes with white sounding names got more interview calls than non white named resumes. What about the cost of losing talent because of the white bias?

Connecting 2015 diversity efforts to the results we are seeing today is beyond stupid. What about the revenue peak in 2020-21. Diversity didn’t bother you then? There is no causation between diversity efforts and revenue slide here at all..

Logic and hardwork will make a company win and not scapegoating like you are trying to do here

Wokeness (or virtue signaling it) has come into play in the hiring process. I’ve seen it myself, where someone external with excellent skills is passed on because they don’t check the right boxes. Doing that repeatedly inevitably has a negative impact on aggregate performance. Now it’s true it may not impact daily decisions (“Gee we need to sacrifice elsewhere to add rainbow coloring everywhere”), but the hiring impact shades everything that is done moving forward.

As someone elsewhere said, BK’s $300 million diversity outreach was essentially funded by $300 million worth of job cuts in 2015.

To meet the numbers A company has to actively discriminate. Engineering 80% white and Asian men. Non technical roles is 65% women and urm. Then the overall numbers look great! A real great company!!!!

Also never mind the noise as so many of those technical roles aren’t actually technical…. M&A and Chief of Staff folks usually listed under technical job codes….but those folks do not have engineering backgrounds.

It’s all a fallacy and playing with the numbers. And when you do that you actively discriminate.

Nice populist claim by folks who can't keep up with the competition. Its much eaiser to have a scapegoat instead of looking inward.

Cmon be real in every meeting I'm in decisions are made with data and logic, not some type of woke agenda. Whatever people want to believe on their own can be compartmentalized at work, and people proceed with the smartest ideas available at the time.

It may have been leadership wokeness, but it also could have been spineless virtual signaling to the woke (as the woke were perceived to be the biggest tech spending demographic). In either case, it had a toxic impact on Intel as many high-quality employees were booted or happily left on their own for greener pastures.

Remember 2015? In January, Intel announced to the world that they were allocating $300M to workplace diversity and showed plans for reaching diversity goals. Just 4 months later, Intel announced it was laying off 1,200 employees (the SSL4 debacle) because it needed to save... coincidentally... $300M. Those 1,200 employees literally paid for Intel's wokeness with their jobs.

Then in 2016, Intel realized the master plan from the year before when they laid off another 14,000+ employees. They didn't discriminate when they chose who to let go, but that wasn't the plan. The real plan was genius. Evil genius, but genius nonetheless. They already had a workforce that they knew wasn't diverse so getting rid of a bunch of employees meant they would mostly all non-diverse employees. The next part of the plan was already in place, which was to make it exceedingly difficult to hire non-diverse job candidates, which is still the case. This made it easy to hit their diversity goals when hiring resumed again. It was very effective because they hit those goals much sooner than originally planned.

If you were part of a hiring team, you know how this worked. HR sent you all of the diversity candidates first and you had to exhaust all of them before they sent non-diversity candidates to you. So you spent a lot more time screening and interviewing,

Besides all of the extra time and resources on hiring, the result was that the best available candidate for a position was never even considered for thousands of positions. There is no way to measure how much this actually cost the company.

nah, we need more diversity, inclusion and equity (DIE). this is the greatest thing that ever happened to the world in general and to Intel in particular.
