Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Life post re-org: worth it?

As ponder options, I find myself wondering if it’s worth sticking around. Consider:

  • fewer promotions/less upward career advancement opportunities by design
  • ongoing layoffs (I.e., ENGINE)
  • smaller raises
  • an absolutely chaotic 18-24 months as the dust settles

I love my job, but as I consider my 5 year goals, I see almost no path toward them. Over the last 18 months, most career advancement talk was performative at best. Basically, you’re going to be where you’re at for the next 5-10 years. I’m having a hard time justifying staying.

I’m going to aim at roles one PSG above. If I get it great, if not I’ll get it somewhere else.

I can't imagine what the next two years will be like if I do hang on. I did this with another company and it was very hard. Loss of self respect. I am in a much better financial situation this time around.

Between ENGINE, Buenos Aires, and the Phillipines, I speculate they're going after individual contributors far more than they are management. By thinning the ranks of workers, they can force managers to maximize outsourced work.

That’s how normal companies work. You stay in a position for 4-5 years and actually have real responsibilities. If you can disappear for more than 2 weeks and the company doesn’t shut down , they don’t need you. But these reorgs can also be a time of rapid career growth if you can find a power vacuum and fill it

Who knows what the plan is. But just speculating: by all accounts they’re trying to thin upper psgs; and number of promotions allowed has no so secretly been decreased; and they want people in roles longer.

If you land a gig, unless you’re one of elites, you’ll be there for the next 4-5 years.

Everything is going to work out fine whether or not you continue with Chevron. You know what industry you work in so you should have been preparing for an eventual layoff before now. Live below your means and save your money. You may need it soon. Even if you don't, you should still be doing this.
