Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

I'd like to volunteer

If there was a way to volunteer I'd be more than happy to do it. Has anybody done this? Did it work?

You cannot legally "volunteer" at a for profit company. That is doing work for no pay. That generates value for a company and cheats the Government out of Social Security and Income Tax payments. Nope.
Unless you like the idea of prison, do NOT steal from the Government, they are a LOT better at it than you are and they do NOT like competition from amateurs.
What if you are injured? What if you invent something? What if you see someone else's invention/discovery or trade secret? What if you damage something? Nope.
There is no reason you cannot have lunch with your replacement and try to transfer knowledge, but it probably will not work very.
I wrote a "user guide" for the processes in my lab, but I have no idea if it was of any value because I was not allowed to know who my replacement would be so I had no idea whether to write for an experienced person or from a green person.

I thought you meant community volunteering. Bruh, why. Don't drink the kool-aid man.

I understand cuts I do, but you cut people with a bank vault of knowledge and don't bother to consult that person before you cut them as to whether or not they have anything on their plate (before said cut) that could 'burn' us (the division) I don't understand their way of thinking. and those who are left with a job are left holding a bag of D!ck's! it's so disheartening! also cut people and push their tasks on to those left with a job but give no incentive. more work same pay! it's a pile of $h!+ I tell ya, it is.

Totally depends on how much you trust your manager. I did it successfully in 2020 during COVID layoff.

Do not volunteer unless there is an actual "official company offer" for it.
But you can speak/hint to your boss if you trust them.
And I do mean SPEAK. No email, no text.

I've been advised never to volunteer. Those who ask, never get. The package is to force people to leave. For those who plan to leave anyway, why waste a package? They know after the first wave of cuts, a second wave will be people jumping ship as things get twice as tough compared to before.
