Thread regarding Suncor Energy Inc. layoffs

Growing Again

In July 2023 my position was eliminated. A month later so was my colleague’s. But here we are in March 2025 only to learn (via LinkedIn) that our Director just refilled it. Hmmm. Does Freddie know? Apparently the type of specialized work we undertook was affordable after all.

Buddy @45j+1jp4cz5ym … I am with you 100%. I was 20 years at Husky when the Cenovus merger made my position redundant. Today I am a contractor working on my old facility at twice my previous rate. I hope you are doing well.

It was super d-mb for my layoff according to everyone I worked with. Everyone that knew me and knew my skillset and what I did for the company was totally shocked they let me go some even saying they would have thought I would have been the last person to be laid off. Of course the genius company does the layoffs hush-hush behind the scenes disconnected from what goes on. Turns out I was called directly and asked to go back as a contractor somewhere right around when my severance expired. Also an employee position opened up for what I do just 1-2 months after the call. The manager agreed with me it is d-mb move that made no sense at all and takes 1-2 YEARS to hire someone new as an employee or as a contractor and get them up to speed. But I’ve left Fort McMurray because what is the point to live there when the company sc--ws around and wants to play games with people’s livelihoods and careers. Fort Mac is not a good place to live if there is no job security. Hey look! Rich Kruger winning business awards because of the he-l he causes! Suncor stock floating around $46.45 today, it was $45.26 when I got laid off in October of 2023. I was laid off mid-career and still had another 15-20 years left in me and wasn’t planning to go anywhere. It cost the company the severance, my position was still needed at the end of the day. Now someone new has to learn the ins and outs of the entire plant that I had so much knowledge of. I could have been working the whole time instead of being paid a severance, and turns out in the end they still needed my skills and abilities but hey that’s Suncor, which is now a highly unreliable place to work apparently.

They’ve tried their own DOGE and now suffering from it. Short term thinking. Sad.

And I bet whomever gets hired, they are cheaper but definitely not better than @h2+1jp4cz5ym was at their job !!

US MBA at work. Move fast, break things, get credit, fix later. I had a similar experience when I was retiring, asked if there was someone I should train after 30 years experience and was told my role would not be replaced. 18 months later and they were hiring for it.
