Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Supplemental Unemployment

Apologies if this has been asked before but looking for insight into how the supplemental unemployment works if you are RIF’d. If your years of service qualifies for the max of 6 months, for example, do you file unemployment in your state during that time period and your state pays out unemployment and then Anthem picks up the difference to bring you to your normal pay prior to being let go?

Also, I have heard you get to keep your benefits during this time. Is that correct and does Anthem keep deducting bi-weekly from your take home?

My payout was a little different, perhaps because I qualified for retirment? I did get 6 months, but it was completely paid by Anthem.( ful salary) After the 6 months I then got unemployment for 6months. . Make sure if you have enough years and had $ going to the RMSA ( retiree medical spending account) Check your statements where they show you all your account balances.i forgot where you get those, but if you have that and qualify to retire, this account pays for your medical premiums

I was RIF’ed in TN. I had to apply for unemployment. Whatever they paid me, Elevance matched it to my salary. I got 4 months of severance for 9 years of employment. I got to keep all my benefits until my 4 months was over but I found a job before it ended.

@cf+1 What is considered 'retirement age' with the Supp rules - 65? 62? or when you reach the age of full Social Security payout on the graduated scale?

It depends on the state, but you have to apply for your state unemployment the first business day after your last day. You will keep your health insurance/dental/eye at the current cost you are paying. Your life insurance is cut off. Depending on your state, it might allow SUB pay, or it might not... if that's the case then Elevance will pay the full amount of your pay for the time you qualify for. My state allows the SUB pay, so every week I have to supply my job search activities, swear i'm not working, then do the same at the SUB pay site. I qualified for the max 6 months, and my benefits expire in May.

Depends on your age and the state where you live. I was past retirement age and had 20 years with the company. I got 6 months pay and did not have to apply for unemployment. Several states including Colorado and California pay all your accrued leave which was like getting another two months pay for me. Since I've left former coworkers have told me they are training off shore people to do their work. Once upon a time, before they made the stupid name change, I would have recommended people try for a job at Anthem. No longer feel that way with the current leadership. I even left money on the table that would have paid for my Medicare because I do not want their insurance.

You have to file for unemployment to get SUB pay. State unemployment offsets sub pay. Theyvus a clause that if you gain employment from another company, they pay 50% of remaining sub balance. Yes you keep health benefits and deductions are taken out of your SUB pay. All other benefits cease.

RIF package has all the information. Just read it very carefully if you get one.

I might have to retract the "no benefits" statement, and maybe also apologize for the typos. Ha. I just pulled my previous RIF SUB packet. It looks like it was revised in 2021.

"If you are currently enrolled in the company health/dental/vision, coverage for you and covered dependence will remain in effect through the last day of the month that your calculated number of RIF payments ends".

Someone with a more recent packet might be better qualified to confirm that is still true.

So you do not keep your health insurance during severance?

I would imagine some state specific scenarios exist.

I immediately applied for Ohio, and the received my regular salary (unemployment + severance) for thr time period based on my service.

No benefits. And your packet should cover all topics, I printed mine at the time and got out a highlighter.
