3Q Loss at Ford

Way to go Ford Leadership team. More bad news to follow.

Ford Motor on Wednesday said it lost money in the third quarter as rising costs took a toll on the company and it wrote down the value of an investment in a self-driving technology business.

The automaker said it lost $827 million, compared with a profit of $1.8 billion in the third quarter of 2021. Its revenue in the three months from July to September totaled $39.4 billion, compared with $35.7 billion in the year-ago period.

Ford said it shipped 1.1 million cars and light trucks in the quarter, compared with just over one million in the same period last year.

The company’s operating profit in North America fell and it lost money in China and in its mobility division, which has been trying to develop self-driving cars and other new lines of businesses. Ford said it was winding down its self-driving technology business, Argo AI, which also counts Volkswagen as an investor, to focus on driver-assistance technology that the company is building internally. That decision led to a $2.7 billion write-down of Ford’s investment in the business. The company said it would hire some employees from Argo.

Last month Ford signaled that costs were rising fast in the third quarter, warning that spending on parts and materials would be $1 billion higher than expected. At the time, it said adjusted earnings before interest and taxes would be between $1.4 billion to $1.7 billion in the three-month period. A year ago it had adjusted earnings of $3 billion.

Like other carmakers, Ford has struggled to adjust to disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, including a global shortage of computer chips. The company’s production has bounced up and down from month to month as parts have become easier or harder to come by.

Maybe its just me, but this is the way I think.
GOOD ideas:

  • Improve quality on every vehicle line up to 10 / 15 years in service
  • Admit why everyone prefers Japanese, Korean, German, or Chinese ( Volvo ) cars vs. Ford
  • Develop more affordable vehicle lines to replace the others axed ASAP
  • Figure out ICE quality and supply chain robustness first before EV promises
  • Let the products speak for themselves when brand new and when 15 years old

BAD ideas:

  • Magical autonomous driving companies and software
  • Scooter companies, eBike companies, roller skate companies, hoverboards, etc etc etc
  • Renovating worthless building in Detroit. (this includes doing anything in Detroit)
  • Writing your own press and believing it
  • Setting year over year recall records
  • Coddling any employee of any gender, race, or alphabet association. Do the work, when they need it, where they need it - or leave.

Per GM comment below. GM appears on all counts to have a PLAN, not a JF article of the month PR spin cycle.

While I did enjoy my time at ford, I went to another competitor automotive company in the design field 3 weeks ago. I'm glad I got out when I did, but I feel bad for the folk that are left behind having to deal with the nonsense coming from the top ranks. The people at the top never take blame or consequences from their actions, but seem to love making their loyal, awesome employees pay the price instead. I guess think Ford first, really means that smh

It’s harder than putting a man on the moon to create an L4 robotaxi that can operate in a dense urban environment, safely, and navigate to its destination."

  • yeah, any thoughtful individual could have told you that years and billions of $ ago. We all knew it would be highly complex and loaded with unknowns and there wasn't any big demand for it anyways. We're going to re-engineer all our roads to assist with self driving vehicles because? Because why? It was nothing more than the hype of the year and Ford and others bought into it and promoted it. So what big shots over at Ford are going to get canned for pushing this and signing off on it? Oh...nobody? Gee that is (not) surprising. Same will happen with your 'all EV' plan for 2030 - when the miners hold you hostage your company will fail. Putting all your eggs in one basket - not a great idea.

exactly. A big old Billion$ loss - that would have covered pensions for many 10s of thousands of retirees. But, they don't care - the big shots over there that bought into this hype probably got bonuses and won't get canned.

Managing a dynamic supply chain is a basic part of doing business. They have been at this over 100 years. Maybe they Ford should benchmark GM in this area.

With the amount of retirees leaving, there's the remaining "8k heads".

Didn’t GM just report increased profits for Q3 despite inflation? I wonder what Ford is doing wrong.

Do the math, you'll see that cutting 5000 more (to get to that elusive 8000 total cuts) will just about erase this $827 million loss.

We are circling the drain, about to join KMart as a former Michigan company.
