Illumina cuts workforce at San Diego headquarters

Gene-sequencing giant Illumina is laying off 96 employees from its San Diego headquarters, according to paperwork filed with the state.

This workforce reduction comes at a time when Illumina is contending with geopolitics influencing its market, increased competition and a declining stock price, which is down about 35% year to date.

The company announced the layoffs last month in a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) letter it sent to the state. The layoffs impact a variety of departments in the organization including finance, many senior scientists, engineers and some directors.

The layoffs will take effect on April 14, May 16 and Aug. 15, according to the WARN letter.

If you are worried about getting Riffed it's going to be ok. I did and honestly it felt like getting a Spot Bonus. Best wishes to all.

Has GIS been impacted by any of the recent RIFs?

HR is mostly useless at every company, or at least the people who work in those functions typically are. It attracts those who weren’t good enough to be successful as bartenders, servers, musicians, physical therapists, or bloggers.

Cut HR. Useless, bloated, and unproductive

Illumina just had a recent riff of 45+ people being impacted. For this next riff, I agree with it and hope it cuts out the extra fat - upper management (managers with managers managing managers) is a bit of a joke considering and makes absolute no sense. Coming from someone who works there today, I want a reduction in management levels. Definitely can achieve targets with that cost savings strategy.

I agree. American workers should always get first consideration. Because we ALL know it's not about "lack of good talent" -- it's about cheap labor. Funny how DEI is ok when it's cheap labor from India.

Corporate GREED is ki-ling us.

H1B roles need to be reduced or eliminated. Keep Americans employed!

Is this the last round that happened in Feb? Affected employees have different separation dates? But with the news of China banning Illumina sequencers it’s only matter of time before we see the next round.
