Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

How will the actual layoff go down?

Will they call people at home and tell them there badge has been deactivated and somebody will clear out their desk? I don't think IT people will want to talk face-to-face. given how cr-ppy this layoff has been handled.

I've heard at a fellow oil company, with an open floor office plan, the senior manager and an HR rep come to your desk and ask you to meet with them. That means getting paraded across the entire floor over to their corner office where they break the news to you. You'll also know layoffs are being announced on your floor when a police officer is seen waiting on your floor's elevator lobby.

Then the onsite staff who are laid off will be taken to "the room" and 2 big security guards will be there so people don't go "APE $HIT" as they are being escorted out the door.

They’ll get everyone impacted on a virtual call and say if you’ve been invited to this call, you are officially left standing and here are the options. they’ll send paperwork via email.

Layoffs are routine, happen every day, almost all large companies have them and mostly without all the drama the drama queens here are cackling about. Are you actually adults? Get over yourselves. It seems like many here are all excited about it and hoping that they get to see some dramatic incident. That's so pathetic.

In the old days your supervisor (or her supervisor) would alert everyone to the day in question and ask everyone to be in the office that day. Around 9am they would call people to the boss's office one by one, starting with those still employed. You would be called in, told you are doing a great job and please go home immediately. Once the winners are off the floor, around 10am, the losers are taken one-by-one and told the grim news by boss and HR rep. Badges are handed in and all access terminated. They are allowed to clean out their office and commiserate with the rest of the sackees. If too upset to clean up, they can go straight home and HR will pack their office and mail it to them.

One lady I knew was sure it was all a mistake. She became hysterical and refused to be fired. They had to bring in all sorts of GMs and HR people before she finally left. It took most of the day. She immediately sued for gender discrimination and won a modest settlement (e.g. 3-5 years pay).

Being escorted out is the walk of shame, everyone knows and secretly do not care, they are far more concerned about themselves. You might get the look of pity or someone attempts to say something consoling, but truth is they are just thinking to themselves “thankfully him and not me”. Then survivor syndrome discussions will be held after the all clear, and you will be forgotten, or laughed about.

It's like being at a cattle sla-ghterhouse. The doomed are called in one at a time, to meet with their boss and a HR rep. You'll be told you've been left standing, or your position was eliminated, or some such nonsense. You'll be given a 1" thick stack of exit papers, including the critical one, the one that says you accept the severance package and in return will not sue the company in any regard. Then they'll want to know if you have any questions - best to say nothing, as neither your boss nor the HR rep can answer any substantive questions. If you make it to 4:30 (or whatever your quitting time is), you get to come in the next day to a very somber office. Your boss will call an 8:00 meeting to explain that this was all necessary, that we now need to move on with the new Chevron. Most of the survivors will be numb for about a week.

I was laid off several years ago at another company and the news broke very early as HR was executing the plan. So everyone waited to get the call, a guy I worked with had a stroke at work while he was waiting for his telephone call. The ironic part was he was taken to the hospital to save his life and when HR called him at his desk he did not answer because he was dying. Since he was a he was a "no show" at the layoff meeting the company terminated him with extreme prejudice and he received no severance. He lived, sued the company and he was awarded money because he lost his health insurance in the process and other cr-p happened. After all that he got his job back and worked there until his retirement a few year s ago.

I agree with you, the layoff will happen when you are work from home. or you will try to login and your security login will not work.
You will be sent a shipping box at your home for your laptop and the papers to review.

Chevron will perform this in a way the people at work do not know what is going on. 9,000 people is a small city so each day there will be hundreds of staff leaving and some will be crying. Too emotional and if the news finds out they will be hovering outside the building. It will be Deja Vu since Enron collapsed at the same buildings in Houston in the early 2000's.

Actually, I have been laid off twice and the CVX was well organized. Don't get all excited. Afterwards you will realize how routine it all is/was and that you are just an employee number. It's no different nor better at any other major, don't kid yourself. Keep in touch with those who count. Good luck with your next job or retirement. It will likely be better.

You’ll have a meeting with supervisor and an HR person. Turn in all company owned materials via a checklist, sign some documents for severance and get booted out the door. That’s how it went for me when I was laid off anyway

Historically they schedule a 15 minute private meeting and do it in person. HR in the room and your supervisor. Unforgettable day for everyone involved, even the survivors.

Those around you will be called into the office of your direct report and given their new assignments one by one. You will sit there waiting for your turn, but as the day goes on, you will become more worried. Near the end of the day, you will be called in and told you were left standing. You might be told you can hang around and apply for the rollup application round in a month, you might be told you have two weeks to pass your knowledge and work onto others, or you might be told to pack up and leave immediately. I have never seen anyone meeting a security detail to "help" them leave directly after you are told that you were left standing, but I guess it does happen for very sensitive positions. Those that were granted EOI will just get an email from HR that day and are commonly given a couple of weeks to pack up and transfer their work (but not always). Not as bad as other companies that I have worked for, where you show up to work and walk up to security: those that can badge in still have jobs, and those that don't are asked to report to offboarding in a nearby hotel conference room.

Likely they will let you know on a day you work from home. You will get a call from your old boss telling you that you were left standing and explaining the severance resources available.

They dont want you to come to the office because then they have to get you out of the office and home.

That would be too kind. They will make you wake up early, go into work, work most of the day, then call you to a meeting and escort you out like a criminal
