Tax on Severance

Is it taxed like bonus where uncle Sam takes 40% special cut or taxes at regular income tax brackets?

Loss of work is one of the qualifying life events to appeal your Medicare costs. If the severance raises your IRMAA it’s an easy appeal.

With federal and state, expect to see around 55% of your money.

For Medicare they take your income from two years ago. If you retire and your income is not as it once was you can fill out a form that says what your new income is and that is the income your Medicare tax should be based off.

Severance pay tax is the same as regular income tax. Chevron will probably withhold 20 22%.

Per earlier post, do your due diligence around IRMA if you close to be eligible for Medicare. Do take advantage in applying for Unemployment Benefits!!!

Yes. Severance is taxed as ordinary income. If you're going to retire, beware, this big bump in income will adversely affect what you pay for Medicare (the dreaded IRMA). You have to plead that this was an anomaly and not your typical income.

Bonuses are not taxed 40%.
Their tax withholding is the supplemental income rate of 22% for federal and then the normal SS and Medicare taxes. And that’s only if the bonus check is a separate check from your normal semi monthly payment. So your chevron bonus isn’t taxed any differently than your regular income.
And, yes, severance is typically considered supplemental income and the supplemental tax rate of 22% is withheld.
