"This is the worst job market I've seen except for during the COVID pandemic."

During the engineering bust of 1983, our E&C company slashed 2/3rd of the staff over a two year period. Every Friday, they would leave notices on peoples desks and you would see them go down to the corner office and then come back and pack up their stuff in boxes. It was very hard and my wife said I was miserable until I got a job offer out of the blue from Chevron. One of my brothers and 3 of my brother-in-laws, got laid off and never got work again in the engineering business.

The engineering business was never the same after that, looking in from the outside and talking to old friends. I think Chevron is going into the same death spiral.

They aren’t getting rid of CTC—just renaming it. The whole reorganization is just renaming things. Same leaders with different titles. They just will get rid of people from the bottom because, as they say, they are doing a bottom up approach. Didn’t help last time and probably won’t this time. Just add on top of that no one will have an assigned cube or office except those at the top and everything is supposed to be just great! Who ever came up with this “modernization” concept needs a sm--k in the face. There is nothing great about it except you can try and cram as many people as possible into the space.

If we cut the entire CTC, everyone else can get promoted. Not a bad deal

If this is the only way you get promoted, then you don't have ay skills or you live in a lower cost geography. If you are LCG, sorry for you...

I’m excited. I got promoted during last layoff in 2020. About time again

Have they ever told us anything useful?

This is a terrible time to get laid off in the industry. This is the worst job market I've seen except for during the COVID pandemic. 2008-2009 wasn't as bad.

If we learn anything useful, I would be shocked. They're flying by the seat of their pants as they do this. I don't even expect to hear what round my group is in.
