Hey, am I allowed to do a remote fellowship or research assistantship for 5-10 hours a week in the evenings while working full-time at CVX? It would help me gain experience in newer technologies that we don't use right now and beef up my grad school apps.

If it’s unlikely anyone will find out just do it. Better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission. Sounds like a good opportunity.
If it’s considered adjacent or competitive to chevron..which is a vertically integrated company so essentially everything. Then they can fire you.
I agree with @ae. If it doesn't interfere with your day job, just do it. It's better to ask for forgiveness than permission in my book. That being said, don't tell anyone at work about it and keep it to yourself.
Why don't you check with the types that have nothing to do with their time but troll layoffs forums and social media sites for rejects. They will give you some sound advice, lmao!
Don't ask. Just do it. Who cares if it doesn't interfere with anything related to your actual day job. As long as you are not giving away proprietary information or working during your day hours what you do with your own time is yours.

1-800-OMBUDS ask about moonlighting policy. Also, asking your boss if moonlighting is ok during layoffs.... might be a questionable decision.
