Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Don’t let the VPs of Staff turn up the pressure it’s their failure

VP of Staffs have no idea how to innovate and grow their business units because they have no idea the products/solutions assigned to their leadership. Using scare tactics about CoC and “all eyes” from leadership isn’t going to work with this year. No funding, no resources, no budget for expansion of team members is NOT Director or Manager problems. Makes me sick to my stomach to see Executives with 20 million dollar pay outs and teams struggling to tread water. You don’t think we are busy enough or facing capacity VP of Staffs and come and join in the work!

"Throat to choke" creates a hostile work environment. Our company is a toxic work environment so this person may feel a certain safety in this behavior.

File an anonymous compliance/ethics report. There's a phone number and a website. You don't have to provide any identifiable information. They may only get a sm--k on the hand but it's deserved.

You know what I hate. It is bashing down good people who are doing their job really well, under the guise of anonymity. I don’t know what agenda you have?. As a person who is direct witness to all the hard work my Staff VP does, and yes it is the very same Staff Vp of FEP that you are trying to bash, on an anonymous forum like a coward, I will not stand for it.! It is unethical and immoral to run down good people. Who knows what’s in store as far as job security goes? That doesn’t make it ok to post lies and cr-p.

Who cares if you like this SVP. They are all pretty worthless and could save other people their jobs just by being in the riff mix. Funny how you all run to defend them but they don’t have any ba--s to stand up to leadership. They would let you get riffed to Save their job in a heartbeat. Do a--kissing sh-t here I see.

I was referring to the Staff VP of FEP. One of the best and very easy to work with. Don’t post cr-p just because you can! Reduces the credibility of people who post here.

Lack of real leadership skills means they lean on external leaders then attend meetings to save face. It’s kinda creepy.

Spark can't be universally loved when a huge portion of the company isn't allowed access.

The SLT could/should be replaced by Spark.

The staff VP of execution in FEP that came from enterprise is an absolute train wreck. She loves the term “throat to choke” and repeats it in front of everyone, including non people leaders on staff calls. Replaced all directors except one with her buddies who are equally as inept. FEP was once the place to be in the company because it was mostly immune from these types of nutjobs. Not anymore though.

Do you think Spark is that useless? Comparing Staff VPs abilities with Spark’s is upsetting. I thought Spark was universally loved. Otherwise, why would they spend a huge amount on it?

Has there been internal research into replacing Staff VPs with Spark?

The staff VP's have no value. They play politics to keep their jobs. They are worthless.

The yes men comments. Unfortunately, this culture requires yes men; anyone who challenges (respectfully) will be replaced with a yes man. If you won’t do it, they’ll find someone who will. Managing up labels you as difficult to work with, or not aligned with company strategy. The culture is toxic - no communication, no visibility, dissent is absolutely unsupported and will show you the door out even if you’re right to challenge the direction.

I've said this 100 times on this site. There isn't really a choice or strategy that can be made by Staff VP's. They are issued directives, they follow or they end up on a list. Same for Director/Manager roles.

I have a good one, but the spectrum of bad to good is very wide and trends bad.
Depends on the VP. Depends on the Org. Staff VPs are a reflection of the person above them. That anyone is giving more than 35% effort below the VP level is a miracle and a labor of stupidity.

My SVP is especially good when we are on 1-1s. As a Chief of Staff, I love going to offsite meetings with him.

What is a one on one?
What is a staff meeting?
No intake, no load balancing,
No accountability or teamwork
Moving fire to fire

99% of staff VPs are just yes men or women carrying down the orders from executive leadership. Most used to be decent leaders but have now crossed that line where all they care about is themselves and their pay until they retire and will do whatever leadership above says. They no longer care about their people, will burn them out in a second to make themselves look good and barely even meet with their direct reports anymore.

To be fair, OP, not all of the Staff VPs are like that. But the bad ones make everyone else’s jobs so much harder. Even though their days are probably numbered.
